Hey everyone
Today was Fraser Island day!
We were up early and made the most of the free breakfast before packing our bags for the Fraser Island trip. A coach picked us up from the hostel and took us to River Heads, where we caught the barge to Fraser Island. The slow barge took 45 minutes to make the trip, but when we got off we were met by our tour guide Shane and the 4 wheel drive bus that would take us around Fraser Island. The bus was equipped with a microphone headset for the driver, so Shane was able to tell us stories throughout the entire day about when he was in the army, the air force, when he was a butcher, and the many other trades he had been in.
Our first stop was Central Station, where we went for a walk along a creek. The water was clean and pure enough to drink from, so we filled up our water bottles with the water. We were busy taking photos so got left behind from the group, but this was helpful when Christina needed the toilet and there were no toilets around... A quick run into the bushes later, with Alex on lookout, we carried on our walk and met the others back at the bus. We later found out that there are funnelweb spiders and poisonous snakes on the island.
Our next stop was Eurong Beach Resort, a nice hotel on the island just metres from the beach. We stopped for lunch here and filled ourselves up on a huge buffet. We then jumped back in the bus and went for a long drive up 75-mile beach, to the only rock on the island, called Indian Head. We climbed up the rock and as it was a beautiful day, had a great view of the surrounding beaches. We looked for sharks, turtles and dolphins in the sea but had no luck - we were told this was because the recent cyclone had disturbed the sea so much and it was still rougher than usual.
We then drove a little down 75-mile Beach to the Maheno Shipwreck, and our ultra-informative guide Shane told us the entire history of the once rather majestic boat, all the way up to how it ended up on the beach, and then how it was used for target practice by the Air Force.
We then went back to Eurong Beach Resort, where we were staying for the night. After dropping our bags off in our nice room it was soon time for dinner, and Alex can't help but mention that we had apple crumble and custard for dessert (yum). It was then off to bed, after a great day where we had learnt loads about the island's history and seen many of ther island's highlights. Tomorrow - the beautiful lakes! Xxx
PS. Sorry for the lizard photo- the sta website has a limited selection and it's the best we could do.
