Hey everyone
Today we went to Kuranda!
We thought we deserved a nice day out amongst the boring days of job hunting, so we decided to go to the rainforest village of Kuranda. To get there we went on the Skyrail, which stretched out for several miles just above the rainforest below. Christina was a little 'concerned' on the skyrail, especially whenever the cables made strange noises above us. The views were amazing though, as we slowly went up and over a mountain before getting off at the first stop to have a little guided walk in the forest. We saw some huge spiders and amazing views out over the forest, then boarded the Skyrail for another little trip to the next stop. Here we learnt about the crazy and dangerous 'flying fox' that went over a huge gorge, next to an equally huge waterfall. School children once used the little wooden plank suspended by a few ropes over the gorge to get to school everyday! We also saw the impressive view over the gorge, and the scenic train on the otherside, which we would go on later in the day, to return to Cairns. The waterfall is much more impressive in the wet season when far more water flows over it.
When we arrived in Kuranda we had a few hours before getting the scenic train through the forest back to Cairns. There were so many market stalls selling everything from beautiful handmade jewellry to rock candy made in front of you. We had a good look around them all, watched how rock candy is made, got lots of free pineapple sweets that were still warm from being made earlier, and Alex gave in to buying Christina a butterfly hair clip.
After a good look around and lunch, it was time to board the train to Cairns. We got ourselves good seats and brochures so we could read about the history of the railway and how the workers slaved away building all the tunnels and bridges along the route.
It was a beautiful journey as the huge train slowly weaved its way around the hills, past waterfalls and huge valleys. At one point the train stopped and we could get out to take photos of the same waterfall we saw earlier in the day. We took loads of great photos, though it was often hard to grasp the vastness and the different colours of the forest in a photo. We eventually made it out of the forest and, almost 2 hours after leaving Kuranda, arrived back in Cairns. It had been a lovely day and a nice change from job hunting. Xxx
