Eight hours had passed on our first stint from Sydney and the night was setting in fast. We were in the middle of nowhere and needed to settle down for the night. A small town called Bega ended up being our saving grace and turned out to be the cheapest place we've stayed. We checked in and turned out to be the only ones staying at this place, the old boy even insisted on showing us a documentary on London cabs, which was nice!
An early start was on the cards and it turned out to be a wise choice as we were caught in traffic and ended up having another 12 hour drive to get us to Geelong. Geelong was a town on the outskirts of Melbourne and the gateway to go through to the Great Ocean Road. Our plan to drive there was devised to save money from not staying in the city and another lengthy drive. It didn't exactly work! We went to every single hostel, motel and hotel in the town and they were all full. Apparently some athletics event was on, so after a game of paper, scissors, rock for the back seat a night was spent, once again in Rio the Kia. Dinner was pizza and beers and soon a cold night set in, which just made the experience even more memorable!
The drive to the Great Ocean Road was amazing, twisting roads, uphill climbs and hairpin bends. Terrain perfectly designed for a semi-sporty hatchback, the Kia surpassed any of the few expectations…kind of! We drove direct to the furthest point on the road, the twelve apostles, and took in some of natures most beautiful sculptures. The land formations you could see were made up of years of erosion and over time it has created some great blowholes and tunnels into the mainland and coastal regions. The drive back followed the coast and had some stunning views and quaint towns to stop off at. We even spotted some wildlife that wasn't flat, although somewhat still as uninteresting but cute nonetheless.
Soon we were back in Melbourne and it was time to drop the car off. Over the last six weeks, we had seemed to of accumulated quite a lot, so for our room mates Christmas came early. 7000 Kilometers later and all our emotional ties detached, the time came to say farewell and leave the unscathed beast behind.
We spent our last day in Oz finalising all our travel arrangements in New Zealand and booked our bungy and skydive too. We wanted to see an AFL game whilst we were here but never got the chance to, but a guy told us there was one that day so we left packing and headed to the MCG, Melbourne Cricket Ground, to watch the Western Bulldogs vs North Melbourne. Once we found out all the rules, we really got into the game and had a great time cheering the underdogs on.
Six weeks have gone past so quickly and now it is time for us to move onto New Zealand and get some adrenalin pumping. We have set the bar pretty high for ourselves booking the highest bungy at 134m and the highest skydive at 15,000 ft so fingers crossed we will still be here to keep this blog going!
