With our travels back on track, we set off for Surfers Paradise swapping our rain mac's for sun cream and our umbrellas for beach towels. The sun was out and the air con was back on for the relatively short drive. We stopped off at a place called Sanctuary Cove, which turned out to be a lovely marina with multi million dollar yachts and over priced undersized chocolate cakes! It was nice to see how the other half lived in a place where no matter if you went in to a newsagents or a specialised golf cart shop, neither had prices tags. Clearly the people who stayed here didn't care how much a magnum white and a gaytime ice lolly cost!
Surfers Paradise is a really cool place with towering sky scrapers bordering on white sandy beaches. The beaches have waves large enough to attract surfers from all around and the buildings are amongst the highest in the world. This has been the first place we have been to that actually has waves so we were pretty excited to get in the water and this surfing malarkey looks dead easy!
After checking in we decided to head up the Q1 for sunset. The Q1 is the worlds highest residential building and has one of the worlds fastest lifts too so we were expecting pretty good views and we weren't disappointed! The views were pretty spectacular so we ended up staying up there for the night watching the world go by. We had possibly the nicest cheesecake that has ever been created and ate it in the slowest way possible, it was absolutely divine!
That night we weren't alone and it was not a very enjoyable experience, as you know the bed bugs had dinner on us! The next morning we went and spoke to the management who gave us our money back for the night and offered us another nights accommodation if we wanted to stay. Risky business but always looking out for a bargain we couldn't resist and after a full inspection of the room all was well. We went down to the beach for the day and enjoyed the huge waves. We were about to leave when a huge black cloud hovered over us and turned the whole town black. We dubbed it "Independence Day" but see for yourself it was out of this world.
Since our second night was bed bug free, we stayed again and set off early the next morning for Wet n Wild Water Park. We got there dead early to beat the crowds and managed to get on all the good rides before all the little kids arrived! It was a nice relaxed day and good fun but after both being to the Florida, it didn't really compare. Oh and this new bald head doesn't shield the sun very well and is a little tender at present! The day shot passed and before we knew it, we were sorting out our next location.
We arrived at a place called Kirra and found one of the coolest hostels we have been to. It has a basketball court, table tennis, pool table, swimming pool and the rooms are pest free! We spend the day playing basketball and table tennis to make it a cheap day. The next day we got up, played basketball again, and met some nice people, we had a game of footy and we all headed down to the beach with a surfboard and caught some of the waves. I have to say we wasn't that graceful and it isn't as easy as you think but you can pick it up pretty quick and its great fun. Were heading off tomorrow to Byron Bay, which will be the end of our time in the northern state of Queensland.
