After the last couple of days being a bit of a disappointment, we didn't want to miss out on much more and decided to make Brisbane our safe haven till the storm died out. It didn't take us long to settle down in a nice place on the outskirts of town, so we went for a walk and wandered the streets of the very metropolitan city. A film was well overdue so we checked into the cinema and watched "The Watchmen", which was mediocre although well filmed.
We had made some arrangements to meet up with some Australian family whilst we were here and headed over to south bank to see them. Whilst we were in the area, we went to Queensland's cultural centre, which was home to their museum and art gallery. They were both quite interesting with the museum housing a lot of local history. There were some good collections of historic travelers and animals found here in both the past and present. After ticking the culture box, we made our way to Chris and Sunny's apartment, which just so happened to be on the top floor of a hotel overlooking the whole city. We had home cooked food for the first time and enjoyed a catch up and introductions for Grillz. We stayed the night and ended up sleeping in the Cinema room, which wasn't too shabby at all!
We were shown around a few of Brisbane sights and got some good recommendations for places further down the coast. The weather started to improve (about time) and we enjoyed a quite day in the sun. The following day we visited Australia Zoo, where we finally got to see a live Kangaroo! There was loads of shows through the day and we managed to see the birds of prey, elephant feeding and the famous crocodile demonstrations, although Steve failed to make an appearance. On the way back from the zoo, we stopped off at the Glass House Mountains and headed up a viewpoint. The walk was only 700m but it was so steep it felt like 7000. Once we finally got to the top, there was a beautiful 360-degree view of the whole national park and you could see for miles. We took the camera out to document the view for your viewing pleasure only to find the battery was completely dead. You would have thought the walk down would have been a lot easier but it was so steep you couldn't reach a crawl! As we knew you wouldn't believe us we headed home and charged the battery up overnight, and decided to head straight up the very next day.
Our last day in Brisbane turned out to be a little surprising for one of us. Currently in Oz, there is a Worlds Greatest Shave for the Leukaemia Foundation and we had seen advertising everywhere. They were shaving people's hair off to raise money for the charity and we had just missed one in town the day before. Adz said that he would shave his off if they were doing it today so we went down and low and behold they were still there! Grillz couldn't exactly participate in this and I was stuck in limbo. Then up marched a 70 year old with her blue rinse and 2 minutes later she was a full on skin head! I really couldn't back down now and with our $21 donation I signed on the dotted line.
As the weather was back on track and we had the opportunity to top up the tan, we packed up, said our goodbyes and headed to Surfers Paradise down the Gold Coast.
