Lesley really has done us proud with our hotel, it is the Art Deco 'Masonic', which actually does not feature in our 'Rough Guide' book. We think that it has been closed for refurbishment, and what a restoration job they have made of it. Every detail is reproduced in 1930's style, and the receptionist proudly points to a wall plaque with the signature of King Edward who visited in 1934.
That was three years after the horror of earthquake and fire razed much of Napier to the ground. The City was rebuilt, and is now a magnet for Art Deco lovers. We walk around the town, play mini golf, with some impunity choosing The Professional Course. The result - a draw of course!
Next day the 28th is special. We've been married for 32 years, a good track record we think. Teamwork rules! That evening, after shopping in the garish green coloured 'Countdown' (the alternative supermarket is a 'Pak and Save', a ghastly yellow building), Roy cooks up a steak dinner. Back to normal food and cutting the cost of daily living!
