Pushkar was one of those wonderful places where you go in with zero expectations of a place, and end of up having one of your most memorable travel experiences so far.
We were reminded that we were at the edge of the Thar Desert by the searing heat which sent us straight to our air conditioned hotel room for the afternoon until we felt energized enough to continue with the day. On a whim we decided to book a sunset camel tour through our hotel because, well, camels! Riding a camel was a first for both of us, and just the sensation of mounting the camels while they were sitting and having them rockily stand up to their great heights while clinging desperately to them was a rush! We were led on a bumpy ride through the rocky desert for 3 hours, pausing at sunset to watch some traditional dancing and music with some other tourists. An unforgettable experience!
Our time in Pushkar was brief, and so for the rest of that evening, we sat at a rooftop restaurant and watched the life of the town below. We are definitely loving being in the smaller towns and cities of India, where you can actually find space to take in the whole experience rather than feeling overwhelmed by it. We watched the cows sneakily trying to get into the shops to steal a bit of food, chased away, only to return a few minutes later to try the same routine. The serene, slow-moving cows just might be one of our favourite things about India, and we will miss them when we leave.
