The weather continues to follow us from England, and it rained most of the day leaving our goal of Eucla about 50km short, as we had to slow down a lot. This was despite the 1hr 40 minutes of straight road, the longest straight stretch in Australia, as we hit the Nullabor proper.
Scenery was stunning, although getting out and taking a photo would have meant that the nob in the caravan we just passed would have needed to be passed again so we decided that was something for the return journey. Plus, the weather made everything look dull and drab despite it being quite pretty. Fi and I have decided to do the Nullabor Links, the longest golf course in the world on the way back as it looks like a fun thing to do…..every hole we passed beckoned us to play.
The day was good in some respects as we managed to see a true Aussie living creature. It was an absolutely stunning Wedge Tail Eagle. The boys were most excited, not only did they see a Wedge Tail Eagle in the flesh, they also got to add the dead kangaroo that it was feasting on beside the road to their ever growing tally of road kill. This game seems to keep them entertained for hours when the Kindle's are banned......again....
The day was spent driving from 9am until 4pm with only a stop for fuel at a place called Cocklebiddy and a coffee at another outback town called Madura. Both towns I wouldn't really recommend as a destination unless you would like to visit the place where you'll spend eternity working should you die and go to hell instead of heaven. I was scared……
We set up camp off the Eyre Highway a few km's short of Eucla and managed to put up our annex for the first time. We were lucky enough that the rain stopped for a few hours to allow us to get it sorted and have dinner and get the kids to bed (without a story……hmmmm….this is going to be a long trip….) before tucking in and settling down ourselves. Without any TV or outside light we end up hitting the sack at 8pm ourselves so no surprise Fi and I are waking up at 4am wondering if we are still suffering from jet lag….. Lesson 4, bring enough lights to do things when the sun goes down. One rechargeable Coleman torch just ain't working.
The morning broke to the thud of rain and the drip of water in the tent. When we looked outside out tranquil roadside campsite had turned into what looked like the Pacific ocean, and only our lesson from the night before of camping on some raised ground saved us (only by about 3cm from the tent being flooded). It didn't stop raining as we broke camp, which took less time again than the day before, and we headed off to South Australia with the nagging feeling that it may be a motel for a night until the rain passes. No-one was really game to brave another night in what surely would have turned out to be the worlds largest Coolgardie safe…. Not much action to be had other than a brief stop to see the cliffs with the howling southerly breeze and constant rain. Loving our decision to go South rather than North to get to Cairns....
We ended up in Penong. A tiny town just West of Streaky Bay where we are going to hole up for a few days and get the fishing rods out and enjoy some Oysters as we've got the good word from cranky Pam from the Caravan of where to source the best and cheapest in town.
