Given that I couldn't lay in bed still without winching in pain at the burns to my skin I figured sitting on the beach wasn't the best idea.. I decided to take a look around the island as it didn't appear to be to big and it meant I wasn't wasting a day.
Okay so I looked at my map and figured if I walked along one side it would follow round the three beaches (to admire the views!) then I would be able to see the viewpoints and walk through the village where the 2006 tsunami hit! Yes, that's right. That huge tsunami hit this island and in fact AoNang beach in Krabi which is just crazy to think!
Right so basically you can't get lost on this island - unless you are me of course. I was walking down to long beach and I think I got there, checked my map and figured if I walked back up and did a few right turns i would see the village! Well yes this happened and it was crazy to think that 7 years ago now this place was washed away. You can still definitely tell as people are still living in makeshift houses with shared facilities and it still has a sad feel about it.
After walking through that I followed the signs for the viewpoint. Turns out there are three and I wouldn't get to see anything from any of them! Walking up and down the most ridiculous hills ever, I finally come across a makeshift sign that has 'viewpoints 1 + 2' this way. Now my gut told me to carry on but then why would they put a sign there?! So I walked the wrong way on purpose for a short while before, out loud, telling myself I should probably follow a sign that's been put there by someone who knows! So long story short, this is due to being hungover whilst writing this entry, I walked around the whole sodding island in 35' heat. It was the same as taking a shower outside - no exaggeration!
I had no choice but to go back, shower and change and then convinced myself an hour on the beach wouldn't be so bad after all! I popped down the to see what all the fuss was about and it really was beautiful.. Imagine this - You're sitting with your toes in between white sand, there is a little lagoon then a sandy island then the sea which is as clear as day surrounded by full green hills. That, my friends, is what you call heaven on earth..
It was hard not to think about what happened all those years ago though.. When I was just laying there, headphones in, there would be no way of me knowing what was happening.. I wouldn't hear anything and in all honesty, if I did, there really is nowhere to go! They must be very confident in it not happening again because 70% of that island has rebuilt exactly how it was previous to the tsunami.. The island is levelled out! There really is just nowhere to hide from it. There was a tree that survived the water, in front of a hotel that didn't and this tree has all the colours of the rainbow in ribbons around it's trunk in memory of that day and it is actually quite moving..
After all that I got myself some grub! Hawaiian pizza and a banana split, could I be more of a tourist?! Well either way I didn't care! I was hungry and that was going to fill the hole! After which I finished my stay with a little spot of shopping.. A new top, trousers and a pair of shorts later I was ready to call it a night and be ready for the epic journey to Koh Phangan via Phuket.
Oh wait, what's that, a cockroach. A big, fat, fast cockroach. Yeah so I pay £1.50 a night and have no encounters of wildlife wanting to spoon. I pay slightly more and they all want to join the party.. Well this party is over. I am not lying when I say I didn't get a lot of sleep and one eye was most definitely open the whole time..
