My feet did not thank me for yesterdays behaviour. After climbing 750+ steps to the wall and along it yesterday, my muscles were making themselves known today and obviously the plan for today was to do an increased amount if walking.
You want to know where I walked to right? That would be Tiananmen Square and then the Forbidden City. The square is, as mentioned previous, a square. That's as exciting as it gets. We were somewhat a tourist attraction ourselves - remind me next time I'm in London to photobomb as many Chinese tourists as I can find.. See how they like it! We quickly learnt that group photos drew a lot of attention, felt like a celebrity just without the money! Highlight had to be actually photobombing some group of old chinese peoples photo with a pout and thumbs up!
So the forbidden city - very famous and important and HUGE. I know you'd all love to know about it and how it is actually important and once I've looked at my photos and see the explanations I photographed instead of reading I will get back to you.. so cultured. so British. However, as a group we discussed it and made the comparison of it being an old school playboy mansion. You have the emperor (Hugh Hefner) and his many wives (the bunnies) and all these secret rooms and buildings keeping his options open.. You can tell we really got into the history and fully understood this place. In all seriousness though, the city is an incredible thing to have seen, the buildings and surroundings you just have to see it to believe it. How cliché..
A few of us were feeling slightly adventurous that afternoon so started exploring Beijing a little more. We took the map and went off in search for the bell and drum towers. They are slightly more exciting than they sound. Just. They are just towers with a bell in one and a drum in the other. We timed it just right as we got to the drum tower just as they were due to start banging them. Awkward moment when the sticks fly out of the guys hand an he then uses his hand instead. Have to give it to him, couldn't tell he had messed up! I guess it is a high pressure job, hitting drums for tourists every hour..
The excitement didn't end there though.. I know, get ready for this. We went to a night market! Just full of food. On sticks! Everything you can think of right now is on a stick. Chances are it was still moving as well!? Apparently scorpions taste better fried if they are alive seconds before.. Who'd have thought it?!
Sorry to disappoint but I chose duck for dinner.. tried plum sauce though and was very much not a fan of that!
