We left KL, without a flight or any means to get to this island, so we headed for the airport and just booked one there, with only an hour to wait. I've always wanted to do this, but it didn't feel quite as good, as I imagine it would to do at home, particularly as we had to wait in line for almostan hour, which kind of took he edge off things.
Nevertheless, a few hour later, and we had touched down n Langkawi, and ventured in search of a hotel. I am beginning o lose some faih in lonely Planet however, as the majority of hotels we have been to or checked into through their advice, have either been atrocious, or double in price. The next one was no better, and after a quick glasnce around the room, and having heard the price, we quickly made the decision that it wasn't for us, and moved along. After a short while, and viewing countless rooms, all worse than the last, we finally came acoss one. A large bungalow, with ac and a fan, and at the cheapest price. Result. After settling in, we wandered to the beach and along the streets, taking our time to look in evry shop, which all housed gorgeous jewelry and accessories. t was all too much, and temptation quickly gave way, when a beautiful ring was spotted and snapped up. Feeling happy having purchased, we went back to the hotel to sleep. WE did this and well, unil the early hours and it dounded as though our room was about to cave in due to the weather outside. The rain was pummelling at the door and the wind sweeping past and battering the windows. It was quite scary in our little bungalow, a definate downside of these small dwellings.
We awoke, surprised that our room wasn't flooded, and our things not destroyed. That day, we finally decided it was time to make some concrete plans, and so we did. We are going to The Rainforest World Music Festival in July, so thought, it best to cram the bits of Malaysian Borneo in before then, so we can then relax and enjoy the festival, although we will probably be all rainforested out by then. However, we had a really productive day over a few smmoothies, booking flights and accommodation, as well as sorting out what will will do on specific days, which leads us right up until the start of the three day festival. Before we knew it, evening had come upon us, and we were running late for our sunset dinner reservation at a gorgeous restaurant right on the beach, and boasting the best views of the sunset on Langkawi. It certainly dissapoint, and we enjoyed a delicious thre course meal, finished off with homemade blueberry cheesecake, Mum you would have loved it, it was divine! And all for a cost of thirteen pounds a head with three drinks. An excellent way to spend an evening.
Unfortunately our sole reason for coming here, for beach time, has been rather lacking due to the lack of sun. However it has made us get into gear and be productive with the planning of our trip, and some needed internet use, to get some photos online.
The following day we went on a boat trip to see some of the surrounding islands, and fortunately, the weather worked in our favour and picked up for us. Aboard a speed boat and sporting sexy luminious orange life jackets, we made our way to island number one, to relax and enjoy the beach. It was a beautiful island smack bang in the middle of the sea, and there was little else to do but paddle in the warm waters to ease the sweat, which had quickly accumulated. En route to the next island, or boat slowed down in the waters, not far from shore, but far enough, to spectacle the sight before our eyes. What we witnessed was dozens upon dozens of eagles, each taking their turn to dive down into the sea in attempt to catch a fish. It was quite a marvel, I just wish my camera had been up to the job to capture the birds in flight. Grandad, would have loved to have seen this, and I'm sure with his camera lenses would have captured the images much better than I have.
After marvelling at the many eaglers, our driver then pointed out a 'pregnant woman' in the trees. The trees and mountainside formed the outline of a pregnant woman, which was quite bizarre. We then went to a lake, which it is said if you drink from it, you will become more fertile, and conceive a child. Neeless to say, I resisted this at all costs. At leastr we finally got to enjoy some (limited) beach time, and bask in (a little) sun, whilst on our 'beach retreat'.
This morning we awoke bright and early, (quarter to five in the morning), to catch our flight back to Kuala Lumpur. The previous night we had booked a taxi from our hotel reception, in the presumption that there would be none around. Good job we had, as there were none, and sure enough, as promised our driver was waiting for us. First problem encountered that our taxi wasn't an actual taxi, just a regular taxi, however, at the time, this didn't occur to me to be an issue of any sorts. The roads were dead as we drove silently to the airport, and upon arrival passed two armed policemen, who seemed alarmed at our presence. Our flight was at half seven, and it was now half five, yet the airport was deserted. Not a light switch on or a soul in sight, but the two armed guards. Our 'taxi' driver, who we since presumed was actually the husband of the hotel receptionist informed us that the airport would be opening in any minute. That was fine. he drove off, and we sat down to wait. Before long, we were joined by the two police men, who began interrogating us over our flights, and began asking us why we had arrived so early, as the airport didn't open until seven am! We assured them that our flight was at seven thirty, and they asked to see a ticket, whcih we didn't have, as it was electronic, and to collected upon check in. They didn't seem convinced, but left us for the time being. I will update later, but basically our flight was at nine thirty and not seven thirty and we had just been waiting around like idiots for two hours. We soent the next day in KL, before flying to KK in Sabah the following morning.
