By late afternoon, we had arrived in the midst of the skyscrapers and into Kuala Lumpur. Immediately, we were ripped off by a taxi driver who drove us two streets north, but nevertheless, at least by being ripped off here, it still accounts to three pounds. Arriving at our hostel, we were expecting to only pay five pounds per night. but unfortunately it was double. Lonely Planet needs to update its books. The rooms pretty shabby, and in need of re-decoration, but at least more importantly the communal bathroom and toilets were clean. We decided to book in for the night, and in the meantime we would check out some other hostels in the area. However, we quickly found that all prices were of a similar rate, and due to our excellent central location in the city, we decided to stay put.
Whilst still outside, we ventured towards the KL Tower, the world's fourth largest telecommunication's tower. It certainly was an impressive sight, and boasts a revolving restaurant at the top, which upon arrival, we unfortunately found was fully booked. Rather randomly, our ticket to the top of the towers, also included a visit to the small animal park, and a 'F1 simulator' The animal park mainly housed a collection of reptiles, spiders, and other creepy crawlies, which I stayed well clear of; and the 'simulator', was nothing more than an exaggerated computer game.
The views from above were pretty impressive I have to say, offering 360 degree views from the illuminated city below. Once we had stared into the distance and beyond for long enough, we decided that food was definitely in order, and returned to the street near our hostel, which was lined with bars and restaurants to grab a bite to eat before bed.
Early morning and a brisk walk ensured we had arrived at the Petronas Towers in time to queue for our ticket to the sky bridge for even more views over the city. We arrived there around nine, but our allotted time to go up to the bridge wasn't until five fifteen, so we had plenty of time to kill. Our first port of call was KLCC, a huge shopping mall located adjacent to the towers. We must have spent hours in this place, going in it, around it, circling the tours inside and out, until eventually, after many coffees, a lunch, and a visit to the Tourist office, our time had come to go to the sky bridge.
Escorted through to a room, we were handed 3D glasses to wear, to watch a short film about the towers, and what Petronas does as a company. A security check later, and we were standing in the lift waiting to be whisked up. The forty one floors, we were told takes approximately forty one seconds to reach. We were told we had ten minutes to enjoy the views, which we did, it was just unfortunate the sky wasn't clearer.
A long time was spent deliberating over our next destination. Our first notion was to head to the Cameron Highlands, however, there seemed quite little do there, except visit tea plantations, which I have already done, and Lucy wasn't so ken anyway. We felt there was nothing mre, but to go for a few beach days instead and relax and recoup. Langkawi, an island of the northwest would be our next port of call.
