Well for the past 5 days I have been doing a learn to scuba dive course. The first two days were in the classroom learning the theory of diving, that was tough being back in a classroom after a long time but it was quite fun learning about scuba diving. We also went in the pool to learn the skills needed to scuba dive. Putting theory into practice, in the lovely heater pool and it was only 4m deep. Firstly we learnt to put together the scuba equipment, jacket, task and breathing equipment. It was really heavy to wear but once in the water it became weight less, which made it a lot easier.
The skills we had to learn were everything from learning to descend in the water to clearing a flooded face mask and even removing the mask to clear it. So anyone who know me well, knows i hate water in my eyes and it was tough removing the mask in the water. One of the most important skills learnt was what to do if you ran out of air,and either with your dive buddy or by yourself. It was really fun learning all the tasks/skills. Everyone was ready for the open water challenge i.e. the big bad ocean!!
So on wednesday we headed to the great barrier reef it took 3 hours to get to the first reef from cairns so time to catch up on sleep as we got picked up at 6am. The first dive was amazing we had to descend using a rope to the bottom of the ocean which was about 6-8m deep adn then we had to redo the skilld learnt in the pool in the ocean to enable us to pass the course and be a certified diver. The majority of the skills were olk and I had no problem doing them but again when it came to taking of the face mask I did cope well and tried to come up to the surface without my air supply not the thing to do, lucky my instructor masa was really patient and helped me with my fear and I managed to do the task in the end. We had 4 practice dive to do all the skills learnt in the pool which took the first day and the second morning, once the skills were completed we all were certified diver which was really good, a really achievement for us all.
In the afternoon of the second day we were allowed to go diving without an instructor but with a buddy. It was great not having to worry about doing more task and just being able to enjoy the surroundings of the reef and and getting to see the different type of fish in the reef. The reef we went to had turtles and sharks but I didn't get to see either which I was disappointed with my I got to see most of the fish from the film finding nemo. Check out the photos. There was an option for a night dive but I had already done 3 dives on that day and my ears just didn't feel right so I gave it a miss.
I would recommend dive to anyone able to do the scuba diving, it was amazing and seeing another wonder of the world was a once in a life time experience. But i'm sure I'll be back to see it again now that I'm a certified diver I can dive anywhere in the world as long as it's with someone and not solo!!
