Tasha's Travels
Hi Everyone
Well i am currently in Airlie Beach- after a 13hour over night bus ride......and unfortunately our hostal wasn't ready so the shower i had been looking forward to the whole journey is still a few hours wait away- grrr. But we have been very productive and have booked an awesome boat trip round all of the Whitsunday Island tomorrow, and we get to snorkel and scuba dive by the Great barrier reef, so i'm so excited about that!
Backtracking to yesterday- we took a day trip tour of Fraser island- the biggest sand island in the world just off the coast of Hervey Bay. It was the most bizarre place i have been to in Australia. The whole island is made out of sand that has been carried from the antarctic and aborignals inhabited the area bringing dingo's with them (which dragged a 7yr old boy from his tent and killed him last month). The island is also really lush, the creek flows 4million litres of fresh water every hour into the ocean, and a large part fo teh island is covered by a dense rainforest.
There is also a 75mile beach, which doubles up as a highway and runway- but its also a popular fishing spot for locals and families to chill out on. Pedestrians have right of way- so the planes and cars have to go round them and at one point our coach had to swerve to the side to allow a plane to take off! It was bizarre!
The sea was so clean a beautiful along the beach- but its shark infested and has snakes and poisonous jelly fish- so its a no go!! We were driven all over the island, we took a bush walk along the creek, and then stopped at Lake Birabean which is sister to the more famous Lake Mackenzie. This lake has formed on top of the sanddunes- it can't flow through because a forest from hundreds of years ago has been compressed to form coffee rock which forms a seal and when it rains the lake forms. The lake was stunning, so clean and blue and surrounded by pure white silica sand, which we were told would polish up everything from our jewellery to our teeth ( gave that a miss!). We also visited a ship wreck ( not that great- basically the japanese bought it for scrap metal and the tow broke down so its been dumped there- i was expecting a bit of a tale behind it not a purchase gone wrong!) We also visited the coloured sands- claire got some great pictures ( my camera is broken... so annoying!!).
So that was fraser island... a really interesting visit- i still can't believe people actually live there!!!
Will let you know how tomorrow goes- we're praying for good weather!! I will get copies of Claires pics and get them up here asap!!
