So it's been a few days since my last blog entry and some cool things have happened. My first night train: From Saigon - Nha Trang. It was an overnight journey which meant bedrooms were provided for travel. Just the standard bunk-bed style but it was so much more than I had anticipated. - Kim had also made out that we should expect the worst, which I was!
The coach we were in was second class. Each bedroom was a four share, all single beds, (which were surprisingly cosy) and we all were given fresh clean bed linen and a pillow -- which all came in handy as my trusty travel pillow that I notouriously take everywhere: mum had washed it, it hadnt fully dried before I left so it is stinking somehwere in the bottom of my backpack (great!). -- Me and Pippa on the bottom bunks, along with another new couple: Hannah and Drew who stayed on the top. - We were the four that had occupied one of the rooms for the 14 hour trip. We got to know Hannah and Drew quite well throughout that night, as did we the Ausie boys Jason and Marcus, the London girls Marisa and Charlotte and Emily, the English/Danish girl from America. They were the group who pretty much made up the neighbour bedroom- We played cards and just chilled with them mostly throughout the night. Everyone seems interesting so far and have had some amazing, travel stories from all over to tell ; Napal, Australia, Equador etc.. Wow!
About the night train journey in itself because that was a first for experience... often calm, with a soothing nostalgic sound of the chooing engine (it reminded me of watching old movies with my nana). I'd wake myself up in panic sometimes because as the night went on, it began to rain torrentially and the sounds of the chuffing engine and water made me think we were going to derail!
- rest assured that it wasn't the case each time I'd wake up, I'd slowly nod off again and managed a few hours overall. I had my second movie moment when a group of us: me, Pip, Sara, Daniel and Jason went for a wonder along the night train and ended up in a canteen/restaurant. The windows were wide open letting in gushes of wind and the speed of the train gave us an imbalance and sway whenever we took a step. In the canteen the lighting was dismal and bleak- there was a tiny and rickety table in the top right corner of the room where an overcrowded group of around five grown men sat playing cards and smoking- that was my moving moment! All these Vietnamese men, suited - looking like officers and really serious were sat on this train, unwinding to a game and a smoke- there was something cool about it- I took a picture of course! Jason ordered some kind of chicken dish and we shortly left for our rooms again. It was like a magical secret discovery.
We arrived in Nha Trang around 5:30 in the morning. With no rooms ready to check into at our hotel, the plan was to find a place to have breakfast then make our way to the beach for sunrise. A stomch full of cheese, tomato and onion omelette later it was 6:30 and too late for sunrise so we made our way to the beach anyway. It was lovely and not so surprisingly, me and Pippa took a lot of photos.
By 9am, a few of us from the group were taking full advantage Kim's recommendation list for Nha Trang and had hopped on a cable car (the biggest of something or another: maybe the world) to Vinpearl Island aka the amusement centre as I called it. It was HUGE! We played about in the waterpark for the most bit: having water fights, races and going on the slides. - The slides were scary though as the steps to climb up were a see-through gridded pattern and me being scared of heights began to palpitate and crawl up to the top almost on my hands and kness- I'm sure it was hilarious to watch, I still shudder!
I also cut my arm at Vinpearl, being too rough with the old the wave riding in one of the pools I suspect- I didn't even feel it but with large amounts of blood spewing everywhere (I'm exaggerating), I had to go to first aid and get cleaned up, how humiliating!
Tonight we ended the amazing day out to Vinpearl with a sunset spent on the beach playing volleyball (whole group) before me and Pippa went on to having a girl date, just the two of us, at one of the beach bars. Further into the we met up with the entire group again and went for an amazing dinner - turns out my meal cost less than the Daiquiris me and Pip had just bought! I had a clay pot with shrimp, spring onion, chicken and rice - exactly my kind of food! I also had a Saigon beer, though I didn't finish it all, it wasn't bad.
After food, we all took some bottles of red and white wine to the local beach where we had a group chill. It would be a lie to say my drinks hadn't affected me- me Pippa, Charlie and Jason went for a dip in the water and afterwards, noticed a sign posted clear as day reading: "no swimming after 6pm" whoops! To avoid anymore trouble us girls (me, Charlie and Pippa) walked along the beach and stopped at a bar where there was a bomb fire. We stayed there of course, hoping to dry off after our cheeky swim but we got moved on by the bar manager when he came over to tell us that we are dressed inappropriately (bikinis) and should move on...
I'm now back at the hotel feeling tired and ready for bed. It's 00:10am, Wednesday and I've got a snorkel trip later today. Goodnight!
