Woke to a manky bread role breakfast (but it was free so I ate it). At 10.30, Amelia, Sas, Sam, Sarah and vince embarked on a 1 hour walk to the beach which was rather further than expected.
There was a huge comedy light house at the start of the beach and we walked 10 mins south to a spot where people were actually in the water and sunbathed there for 1 hour. At one point a stray dog came and walked on my towel and it wouldn't shoo away so I hit it with my book. I thought Vince was going to hit me (he LOVES dogs)!
Amelia and I tried to swim in the pacific but it was very cold! Our ankles went numb. We didn't have enough time to dry off as ppl wanted lunch. Sas and I couldn't afford lunch so walked back. The combination of wet swimmers and an hours walk in the midday sun left me with two big graizes on my inner thighs :(
Garth had bought a chicken from the supermarket which we had for lunch whilst watching the last Harry potter movie. We then watched the end of Woman In Black after having a fun Skype convo with Jonny and Emily!
I snoozed for an hour before joining the group for our star gazing tour. Our mini bus was 20 mins late and we weren't spoken to at all and we're given no welcome or instructions for the evening?!
We drove for 1 hr before stopping in a town where there seemed to be a big party/gig going on in the main plaza. There was a lot of confusion for 20 mins before we got back on the bus for another 25 min drive up to the top of the hill. It was the Mamalluca Observatory.
It was super touristy and there was more confusion but we eventually got onto the English speaking tour. Our guide was lovely but struggled with translating some of the technical words but we first went up to the big dome telescope. We all took turns looking into the telescope. We first saw Jupiter and 3 of its moons. Then we saw a nebular in Arians Belt which was beautiful.
We were told to dress warmly as it would be cold. But it was a really pleasant temperature for midnight! So I carried my coat, scarf and gloves around! I'm learning that when they say 'cold' in south America, it means a different thing to 'cold' in England!
We went downstairs in the telescope for a power point presentation where the guide showed us more photographs of nebulas and extreme close up of stars we had already seen. He showed us a video where he zoomed out from Chile to show the entire universe as so far mapped by human kind. It was mind blowing!
We then went outside to view some more stars. Our guide used a mega green laser that shine for miles and enabled us to see the stars he was talking about. We saw the southern cross and a cluster star. We saw the moon super close up and was breathtaking! It was one day off a full moon and I could see the craters in detail. It was so bright I had purple vision in one eye for 10 mins after looking. I was even able to take a photograph through the telescope!
We then made our way back to the hotel which took an hour and we got back just after 2am!!
