We drove on up the Bruce highway through Bundaberg and out to a coastal resort called Bargara on the false promise that I would be able to go on a whale watching trip from there instead of Hervey Bay. This was a mistake. No whale watching from here at all. It took me quite a while to get over this knowing we would not be driving back to Hervey Bay. The site we chose was again rather strange having mainly permanent residents who were friendly but odd and wanted to inspect our campervan. It was run by a fast talking almost incomprehensible guy who charged us rather too much for a rubbish pitch. We went on the beach but it was too windy and there were rip tides so we got a bit too nervous to swim. We met another wierd man on the beach (who again talked very fast and in an odd accent who said something about “catching a whipee” or a “whoopee”) so we went back to the campsite. Oliver and I had to start drinking very early on to get through the experience and we packed up very early to get on the road again. The road trip between Bargara and Mackay was the longest we did. We drove for 11 hours to get out of sugar cane hell. This did result in Oliver going slightly mad and starting to sing songs about Australian animals. My favourite was the rock opera styled “ode to the Tasmanian Devil”. However Angus’ ditty about koalas has stuck and we sang this to the koalas on Magnetic Island. I made up a good one about a weedy seahorse but no one will join in with it.
