So here we are, finally on the trip we've been thinking about for ages!!!
The 12 hour flight across was pretty uneventful which was good, even nicer to know that that's our longest flight for a long time!
We navigated the train & tuk tuk rides to reach our first hostel. Don't think we could have picked a better place. 10 mins walk from the chaos of Khao San Road but far enough away for a little slice of peace when you want to sleep. Run by an incredibly helpful lady we settled in quickly to 4 days of sightseeing. Having met some incredibly friendly and helpful Thai people so far it was inevitable but to be scammed on day 2 was embarrassing!! It did of course sound too good to be true but we thought we'd relax as everyone had been great so far!
The promise of visiting 4 different sights around Bangkok whilst the driver waits for only 20 Baht (40p). For the 1st part of the journey it was exactly that as we visited numerous temples and our driver was always exactly where we left him. Then he took us a tailor and the scam reared its little head. We weren't too annoyed at this point as no sooner had we said no to buying a new suit, we were escorted out from the tailor as he was "too busy" for time wasters, then onto a tourist agency, this stop was actually quite helpful as we needed some info but again no annoyance that we didn't buy anything. Then we were dropped off to our last destination as requested. In reality if that is the worst scam in Thailand yet, we got off very lightly as we still saw the sights for over 3 hours for 40p!
The following day we went to the Grand Palace. Another great scam we discovered was being told the temple was closed due to monks praying/festival/locals only! So the 'helpful' person can then show us round some temples that are open, oh and he has a tuk-tuk ready round the corner to take us. The reality is that it is all bull, you can go in anytime and if you are unfortunate to have not prepared, they have clothes to cover up respectfully to loan you.
The palace itself is large and sprawling and beautiful. The efforts the Thai's go to to show thanks to their religion is insane! Everything sparkles and is cared for with love.
We headed over to Wat Pho after the Grand Palace and again laughed at people who suggested it was closed. What a place, I knew it as the temple with the Reclining Buddha and indeed that in itself is stunning but the grounds themselves blew both of us away. Amazing architecture, quiet enough that often it was just Sy & I alone exploring every inch of the place. It really left an impression on both of us.
After a great first few days we spoke about what we should do after returning to Bangkok from Myanmar. Should we go south, should we take longer going north stopping off along the way? We made some decisions and chose some great places to stay. After a recommendation we decided to try a restaurant around the corner. Had an amazing vegan meal, 20 years ago they didn't know the concept of vegetarianism or veganism but now it is completely catered for. One of a multitude of things demonstrating how much the city has changed.
Packed for an early morning flight to Yangon, where the true adventure will undoubtedly begin!!

Bex Good times - it would not be Bangkok or your first visit without the 20 baht for a long tour scam
