This is part of the inside of the Mesquite Cathedral (Mosque/Cathedral) that we walked through yesterday. We were lucky enough to get tickets to go inside of this building. Very impressive portrayal of the history of this site which began in 532AD!!! (I find it hard to get my head around that.) The influence of the Christians and the Muslims is very clear.
We loved just wandering around all the quarters of Cordoba. My fascination with doors has extended to cobblestone patterns - there are hundreds of different patterns. I try to imagine the traffic that has passed over these roads and alleyways.
It was a gorgeous sunny day and we really enjoyed just meandering along the cobweb of narrow lanes. There were orange trees everywhere. We were curious to know why the fruit was still in them. Turns out that they're very bitter and only useful to make marmalade.
We came across the huge Corredera Square flanked on all sides by old apartment buildings. There were pop up beer garden/cafe type areas divided by rope fences. We sat and had a beer and laughed at the cacophony of dogs. One huge barking dog was on a second floor balcony and every other dog in the square answered him. There were dogs all over the city. All shapes and sizes, all on leads.
There were horses and buggies too. Some were gorgeous Andalusians.
On our way home we stumbled across a Roman mausoleum. There's historic sites left right and centre if you look hard enough.
While the streets in the old, old town are virtually a nest of tiny cobbled alleyways the streets in the newest section of the city a really wide and paved. Between our hotel and the city runs a very long promenade with cycle lane and water features. The railway station is at the end of it so imagine the lines are under the promenade.
We are at the Irish pub again. Not very adventurous but enjoy their fresh green salad dishes.
