Day 1 Continued.
Ok so having arrived here nice and early this morning, negociating the local public transport, getting lost and getting wet we eventually arrived at the hostel. Tempted by a free breakfast (cereal, toast and dumplings), we opted for the conventional with coffee and juice. Then after the internet and freshening up we headed out about 2pm. We had decided to try and find the Bund, so back on the metro we went. (Not as easy to use as Beijing and also not as cheap but gets you there in the end!).
We took the metro to Nanjing East stop (one change), once here and after a bit of map reading (mum I'm getting better!!) we headed over to the Bund passing through the tourist tunnel on the way (the free one)! Passing through a park we were then on the walk way along Huangpu River. This is the main river through Shanghai and does offer various boat trips so we might do one in the next couple of days. And would you believe it whilst walking along I heard a hello and turned to see one of my fellow nurses from BCH. He's the nutritional care nurse and just here on holiday for a few weeks. Of all the places to bump into someone you know!!
Once we'd finished here we went for a small walk around before heading back up Nanjing East street. Its one of the main shopping areas (Caroline was in heaven!) and also surrounded by sky scrapers. As it was dusk by this point all the lights were starting to come on, so starting to look pretty. We eventually decided on dinner above a shopping food store. Wouldn't have known it was there if we hadn't been in the store. Western food but very reasonable! (2 mains with 2 side dishes, 2 desserts and 2 drinks for just over a tenner!!). After dinner we had another walk around before heading back to the hostel.
We've decided that we both like Shanghai, alot more colourful than both Xian and Beijing! Xian was surrouded by grey buildings. In the three places we've been to so far it appears that pedestrians come 3rd best!!! Pavements are scattered with bikes and motorbikes, so therefore making us walk on the road!! Zebra Crossing exsist but are not used! Constanly having to look left right left right as your crossing, trying to avoid cars and bikes! And forget it when its flashing a green man this means nothing!! All fun! Were loving it here but both still struggling with the constant spitting in the street and its always nice to find a western toilet!! (M&S didn't let me down!!).
