So time for a bit of backdating! Im in Byron Bay now and have got some time to kill before my first surfing lesson. Booked with a company called Koolkats! I dont expect to stand up as ive tried before on the isle of white and in cornwall in year nine so this 3hour lesson is going to have to be pretty good if im gona make it. Maybe the aussie surf will make all the difference- ill let you know how i go!
So arrived in Hervey Bay on Sunday with the trip planned for the following day. Good job as i was shattered from the trip. The hostel at Hervey was pretty kool, like a little student apartment with a kitchen downstairs. These things make all the difference! Took a walk along the coast and decided there was absolutly nothing to do in Hervey bay. Good job it was only for a night! Jumped on the courtesy bus to Target where i wanted to purchase some new shorts and hit the chemist for some drugs for my cough. Target is awesome -they've got them in america too, a bit like Primark superstore! Perfect. Anyway why im telling you that i dont know, but up early the next day for the briefing for Fraiser Isand. Watched the video where they tell you how to avoid a Dingo attack! If this viscous animal should approach you have to cross your arms across your chest and back away slowly, making yourself as tall and as big looking as possible. Erm..yeah.. anyway drove the trucks to the kit store and loaded the truck. Group consisted of 3 swedish guys, 1 english guy from bromley, one dutch guy, 1 italian, and two girls one german and one canadian. Perfect- lots of boys to put up the tents! So basically they give you a ticket for the ferry a map and some camp gear. They tell you where you can go on the island and how to pack the truck. After that its off to the supermarket to organise your food for the next three days with a bunch of people you've never met before! Pretty exciting. Turns out the boys were crap at shopping and insisted on buying half a cow for our BBQ the first night! Needless to say it didnt cook properly, took ages, and wasnt that tasty after all. Being girls i think we took over really but good job the food budget was perfect. Once the boys had got their 4 crates of beer on board we were off for the ferry. Great fun!
The driving was hilarious, ive been on a bumpy road before but this is something else. Spent the first couple of hours laughing hilariously at being squashed up in the back of a big truck and literally being thrown around! Elbowing people in the face is a great way to meet people! Got tothe best lake on the island! Lake Mckenzie is gorgous! I decided to swim aross it and most of the group managed it too, pretty kool. We walked back- the boys were tired. lol!
After that headed to the shop to get some ice and then hit the beach at a million miles an hour to get up to the ship wreck and find somewhere to camp. Pretty kool when you can just set up camp anywhere on the island. Welcome to the world of the dunny toilet and your friend mr spade. I think the boys on purpose chose somwhere with absolutly no trees to have a wee behind! they thought it was funny! Anyway no dramas camp was kool and we set up our bbq and had a nice evening.
Up next morning for sunrise- back to bed for a bit- then off to the champange pools, indian head, a walk to wabby point and a bit of sand dune surfing on a random hill. Saw some dolphins (just about) from indian head which was kool! Had lunch somewhere- and as the Dingos had stolen our meat ...shhhh. dont tell the ranger, some idiot left out coolbox out...we made do with a salad sandwich! Oh also got a flat tyre- lots of boys to fix it no problem!
Dingos would not be scary if there wasnt any hpye. They look like normal dogs, but instead when a bunch of them decided to desend on our camp the next night I have to say I was a little scared. Maybe the one that got our sandwich ham had told his mates there was a bunch of stupid people with food on the island but they didnt leave us alone all night. One acutally came within a metre of me and of course I calmly folded my arms across my chest and backed away! B****ks I screamed and ran away leaving one of the swedish guys to look after himself. Kicking a football at the Dingos also seems to work quite well as a deterant or so we found! (naughty)
Anyway next day set off again- after again making it up for sunrise- and headed for Lake G.....something (which was yellow) and then for lake Wabby. No one had warned us about the massive long trek across a mountainous sand dune that it takes to get to lake Wabby. The sand was so hot we had to run down the bank into the water! My feet were on fire!!!!Ouch. After an embarrassing non-impressive entry into the water, (caught on film of course) we headed back to the ferry for our depressing trip home. Sad to leave lots of fun, although have to say it was kinda nice to get to the other side with green grass and cows.
