Left Bali Sunday on a midnight flight to Darwin. Didn't get any sleep but due to the time difference it was 4am when I arrived in Australia. I had no idea how strict customs and immigration in Australia are, maybe we could learn something from them. You can't take anything through with you, no food, wooden souvenirs etc and they sent a sniffer dog down the line. So you already feel like a criminal before you even arrive. Then you have to get through immigration. I got through the first stage where they stamp your passport fine but then I was stopped by a secondary officer who asked me a ridiculous amount of questions for 4am, along the lines of "do you know you can't work?" "it's highly irregular that you're travelling alone without planning to work, don't you think?" Er no. Finally she let me through, after showing her my ticket and struggling to form coherent sentences.
It seemed ridiculous to pay for a hostel for 3 hours and couldn't check in until lunchtime so I figured I just be able to find a cafe in the airport. But no, this is Darwin we're talking about! There were a couple of vending machines, a cafe which didn't open until 10.45am and no comfortable chairs. A lot of people just crashed on the floor for a few hours but couldn't quite bring myself to sleep on the floor, it just didn't look very clean! So after 6 very long hours in the airport I caught the shuttle bus to the hostel and crashed for a few hours.
Spent Tuesday exploring Darwin, but it's not very exciting. It's a nice enough place but pretty small, almost feels like a large town rather than a city. Not many touristy things going on! It's very hot and humid but nowhere near Bali, so for me it's quite refreshing!
