Well I'm now in Christchurch, the biggest city in the South Island but that isn't saying very much. Started the trip in the South Island by heading down the west coast, where it rains continuously and you don't get any mobile reception either! Did get a break in the weather for a walk in the Abel Tasman National Park and also for a hike on the Franz Josef Glacier. Unfortunately I fell over on the glacier while our guide was trying to make me go through a really small cave and now if I catch my arm on anything I have to take deep breathes for a few minutes! Hopefully it will fix itself soon. The west coast is pretty empty and feels really isolated. I think it is probaby more impressive if you can see out of the windows of the bus to see the scenery, but I think they get something stupid like 260 days of rain a year.
Spent a few days in Queenstown with some people I had met on the bus. We had the compulsory Fergburger (which is genuinely awesome) and a trip to the World Bar for cocktails in teapots (not so awesome). Was going to head south straight away to Milford and stuff but the weather was awful so instead have headed north to Christchurch with the intention of doing that at the end of my trip. Going to go on the transalpine train and then back down to Queenstown for the winter festival and some snowboarding for a week or so. Unfortunately have no spare cash for bungy jumping (so don't worry mum!). Then after that my time in NZ is nearly up. Getting a little apprehensive about South America. Everyone I talk to seems to end the conversation with "be careful" but then I think they are just the ones that haven't been there themselves! I'm pretty excited about it at the same time as travelling in Oz and NZ has been too easy, less like an adventure! I can't wait to come back though, I love it so much down here. Damn that it's on the otherside of the world!
