The group was heading to the Mekong river tour and although we were originally considering going again, the 5 hour round-trip bus trip wasn't appealing. Instead we went hunting for another coffee place. Steve also relented to the shoe-shine guys and paid to have his slides cleaned. The guy wasn't as thorough as the one we did for Sue's shoes in Hanoi but it was better than nothing. It didn't cost much and it helped the guy out.
We ordered a Grab across to Ben Thanh markets and wandered through the stalls. Most of the vendors were selling the same thing - clothes, bags, souvenirs, luggage, coffee, dried foods etc. We decided to buy Sue a "boob bag" - like a bum-bag / fanny pack (lol) but is positioned across the chest. It's a lot more secure than pockets or holding things in your hand and we'd had a couple of close-calls nearly losing credit cards and ID out of Sue's phone case. We bargained with the young guy and although we probably could have got one cheaper, it still wasn't very expensive so we were happy to pay it.
We had time to kill so we sat outside a coffee shop and ordered multiple cold drinks, watching the world go by. An old lady selling lottery tickets approached us and asked if we could buy some as she needed to buy food. We bought two tickets from her and she immediately went next door and purchased some sort of round white bread-like thing about the size of a softball. Thanking us profusely she went on her way. We gave the tickets to our table waiter along with tip. He was very pleased and went back to tell the other staff. Apparently those lottery jackpots are worth billions of VND so it would have been nice to see him win something.
We ordered a Grab and went over to Landmark 81. This is the tallest tower in Vietnam and you need to buy tickets to get to the top. They also have security screening of visitors and belongings as you enter. Our ears popped several times as the elevator ascended to the top. The views were spectacular and we got several panoramic photo's.
Steve went off for a walk and had a massage which was very relaxing and only cost about $30 AUD with tip.
After dinner we went out to a bar that Freddy knew. It wasn't the most upmarket place but the girls were friendly and it had a great feel. We played darts on the electronic dart board in teams which was a hoot.
