sucks to be you guys i'm off!
Hello all,
So ive moved from Thailand and am now in rock and roll cambodia. Its what i guess people call a culture shock! the kind of place where pavements and even roads are considered a bit posh. Crossing the border is a real eye opener going from Thailand with its skyscrapers etc into a country thats kind of been left behind. We travelled from the border to the town of Siem Reap on what the locals call the Dancing Road. A name that suggests romantic lanes gently weaving through pleasent villages with beautiful scenery, but it turns out that a dancing road in any other language means dirt track full of massive pot holes that the poor unsuspecting traveller is stuck on for the next 4 hours while the crazy local driver tears along at a considerable rate of knots weaving this way and that, never seeming to actually drive on the correct side of the road.
Anyway, god knows hoe but we made it to Siem Reap in one piece. Spent a couple of days going around the ancient temples which was a fantastic experience, some of the temples have trees growing through them, the photos are amazing but the internet here is too slow to upload!
From Siem Reap i've made it through Kampong Cham on the mekong river, its amazing how many people live along the river. From there it was on to Phnom Penh, which is very similar to bangkok but with a few more things to do. There are loads of beggars here and its difficult because you cant give to all of them, the thing is that these people are really really poor and many of them are casualties of the war or landmine victims so they dont have legs, arms etc, its really shocking and quite upsetting.
I have been to the landmine museum where they help rehouse people that have stepped on mines, the society as a whole treats them as sub human.
Also went to S21 which is a school that the Khmer Rouge used to torture and kill about 17,000 educated people in about 4 years under Pol Pot. Its the most upsetting thing that i have ever seen in my life. You can walk around the whole place and there is a photo of every person that went through there and also many photos of people either dying or dead, They didnt use guns because they couldnt waste the bullets, so ill leave it to your imagination. Also went to the killing fields where about 3.5 million men women and children where executed and burried in mass graves.
Its not all doom and gloom though, Cambodia has come a long way since then and the people are determined to develop the country and are extremley welcoming. I stayed with a family last night in a wooden hut, they cooked food for us and we talked and drank rice wine long into the night, it was fantastic.
Today ive travelled down to Shinoukville which is a beach town and it looks really nice. Going to stay here for a few days to relax after a hectic few days travel, got to try and get rid of my T-shirt tan!
Hope all is well back home i'll get a phone card in Vietnam and get in touch should be about a week or so, take care all.
