This morning after breakfast we set out for the City Tour Bus and rode it to the stop by the Marie Louis Park. There we got off and walked through the grounds of this vast park and visited the huge plaza and fountain of Plaza de Espana. Arriving at the other side of the park, we reboarded another of those buses for a trip to the Church of the Nossa Señora Da Esperanca also called La Macerana. This contains the figure of the Virgin known as the Macerana. Crowds of people were in line to kiss the hand of the Virgin. The museum associated with the church houses the vast collection of silver scepters and ornaments along with the huge gold platforms which are carried through the streets during Easter Festival processions. These are moved by about 60 men underneath. In addition to the weight of the gold and marble, the platforms carry the Macerana figure as well.
Lunch was again taken at the excellent restaurant on the second floor or our Hotel Alabardero where I had a delicious loin of sole served with a type of Chanterelle mushrooms
To complete our day we attended a performance of Manon Lescaut beginning at 8:30 and ending after midnight. It was a fine performance in four acts.
