While having breakfast and packing up this morning there were truck horns blasting on and off, not a usual occurrence. When we left we found out why. The BC teachers have been on strike for some weeks ( arguing over class sizes and composition) and negotiations between the govt. and unions don't seem to be getting anywhere. Opposite our hotel there were 20 or so teacher supporters with placards rallying for support for their cause. Poor b*****s looked like they'd been there for some time, most sipping coffee and all were rugged up. It was about 10C when we left but it was far colder earlier.
We set off once more with no specific destination in mind. We lost a day when we went to Whitehorse so need to either make it up or use another two days and reschedule the three days on Vancouver Is to after the cruise. It all depends on where our wanders take us today :-)
Not far past Burns Lake as we were following a truck a moose dashed up and over onto the road in the front of the truck. He braked heavily and only just missed it. The moose was quite young I think, no antlers but it sure could run when it got a fright lol I got a couple if poor quality long distance pic suit however you look at it we've now seen one moose :-). It was only a couple of k's down the road when we spotted a black bear grazing by the roadside. With a truck up our clacker we couldn't get back in time for a pic.
We went through a series of small to med sized towns many clearly logging towns including Vanderhoof, the geographical centre of BC. There was quite a smoke haze ahead of us possibly from as far away as Yellowstone where we've heard they once again have wildfires?
Between the towns it was mostly rural, lush paddocks with mostly cattle but some llamas and domesticated bison and lakes.
We were pulled up by the RCMP again today, third time this trip. They asked about the car, where it was registered as we only had the back number plate - ok in some states but not for BC registered cars apparently. I actually think he was bored cos he was more interested in where were from, where we'd been and were going. Nice guy but he wasted 15 or more minutes with his chit chat.
Most days our journey is more about the road trip than the destination, today by lunchtime we decided it was about the destination. Nothing was piquing our interest as we went along so we decided we'd keep going to Vancouver and cross over to Victoria in the morning.
We stopped at the Woodpecker rest area just out of Prince George for lunch, the spinach we picked up from the farm yesterday was fantastic, by far the nicest spinach ever including that which I've grown myself and freshly picked at home.
We came to a mountain range that we had to cross. The road climbed high and dropped dramatically as we wound our way through Fraser Canyon. A railway line ran each side of the canyon, one high the other low. Each carried very long trains winding around the sides of the canyon often through tunnels.
We stopped at a fruit stall, it was called Hilltop Farms. When we first got out of the car all we could smell was sweet fruit, it was delicious. Once we got inside the stall all we could smell was pot! It should've been called Hillhigh not Hilltop lol we bought a 5lb box of nectarines, still in Canada but for some reason it was all sold by the pound - perhaps cos that's how weed is sold?? Lol anyway, they were delicious, almost as good as the Central Otago ones :-)
The road kept on winding its way up and down, over bridges & through tunnels. We went through no horse towns with names like Boston Bar (no bar in sight) and Spuzzum, I mean really? You call a town Spuzzum then wonder why nobody wants to live there? Lol
After what felt like hours we popped out if a tunnel, went through Hope and were on hwy no. 1 and on our way to Vancouver. We stopped an hour short, checked into the Ramada, had some dinner, did our laundry and settled in for the night. Tomorrow it's onto Vancouver Island for three nights.
In case you can't tell the pic is of our lone moose sighting, blurry though it is there's a moose there!
