Claire & Steve's Excellent Adventure
Headed to Jaipur today, very very bumpy road though. Stopped on the way to see the monkey temple - very run down and lots of people bathing and washing clothes in water that can only be described as green. Many monkeys obviously and got a red dot put on my forehead by an old and very cross eyed lady although it is apparently good luck! The hotel is decent and run by a nice family - we watched a hindu wedding party from the balcony. Crazy dancing when the groom arrived on his white horse and loads of vibrant coloured saris. Good to watch them preparing and cooking traditional Indian dishes. Bride and Groom sat on thrones for the evening and had photos taken; the bride looked particularly miserable but apparently this is standard practice. After the best nights sleep yet we visited the city palace, royal palace and the observatory within the pink city. All the ancient buildings are pink and the shops were all repainted the same colour pink for Bill Clinton's visit in 2001. Saw some very interesting weapons on display at the royal palace some of which were particularly nasty!
Spent some time climbing up to Amber fort - huge structure on top of mountain with amazing views. Lots of steps to climb and the weather is very hot so we weren't looking our best by the time we got to the top. Watched the elephants bathing in the lake below and relished the calm before heading back down. Pizza and a cheeseburger for lunch...yummy!
Did a bit of shopping in a silver shop, bought a nice bracelet and tested out my haggling skills although they need a bit of work. Later went to see where all the past kings were buried before setting off back to hotel. Very busy day.
