DAY 10
Keen to forget last night's embarrassing ordeal, we woke up early and planned to fill our day with plenty of activities to take our minds off just how stupid we had been.
Our first stop was the Yu Yuan Gardens. Upon entering the gardens we came across a security guard who was listening to Sean Kingston's unforgettable hit 'Beautiful Girls', so we joined in and had a little sing along with him. Daley even danced a little. Me? Well, you can't lose what you never had, so I went for standing, not too close as to be considered involved but not far away as to be considered a loner, just looking slightly awkward. (Well played, you massively uncoordinated white boy.)
The Gardens were very nice and on a quiet day I could imagine it being a fantastic place to while away a couple of hours in peace, but such is the case with so many of the tourist attractions in China, that everywhere you go, you're crowded out by hoards of tourist groups. Still, we managed to spend a couple of hours at the gardens before making our way over to People's Square, where immediately upon exiting the subway station, we were greeted by scores "students" wanting to know where we were from and inviting us to join them at "Tea Ceremonies." I wasn't best pleased, and I think Daley could sense that I was ready to embark on some kind of vigilante revenge assault to avenge last night's dented pride, so suggested that we have a quick look around the square and the park and then get something to eat.
I grabbed, what can only be described as, a shallow fried keema naan from a local stall and we then had a look around the shopping mall adjacent to the square. Within minutes we found ourselves in a Hershey's store, with an annoyingly addictive, all-American theme playing on repeat. Now, I'm not really familiar with the Hershey's brand but Daley loves these places and I reckon his nose is trained to pick these places out from miles away, so it's no coincidence that we ended up there. He helped himself to a hot chocolate before we made our way back to the hostel and spent the evening drinking a couple of beers and shooting some pool.
