Day 7
Monday was a slow day as we had to wait around to find out if our Chinese visas had been granted, so we went to the swimming pool in Kowloon Park for a couple of hours, grabbed some lunch and then picked up our documents in the afternoon.
Having had our passports back in our hands for a matter of seconds, we decided to add another stamp to their pages by spending the evening in Macau. We made our way over to the ferry port on Hong Kong Island and boarded a TurboJET ferry for the one hour journey between the two Special Administrative Regions of China.
By the time we arrived in Macau it was already dark and many of the tourist attractions were closed for the day so we only got to see the ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral but what we did experience during our time there was an Island that appears to be all style and no substance. Casinos everywhere, built as a playground for Hong Kong's high society and wealthy tourists. If you can imagine a place where the buildings could hold their own on the Las Vegas strip, yet the locals on the streets wouldn't look out of place standing behind Lenny Henry while he begs you for a donation, you pretty much have Macau.
Having done some further research on Macau since I returned to Hong Kong, I am probably being a little harsh with my judgement as I didn't have chance to experience much of the island's culture. I wouldn't class this as a wasted journey and would definitely like to go back one day to find out what Macau really has to offer, besides cleaning me out at a Blackjack table.
