We are trekking from Le crestet to Vaison la Romaine today which is on the banks if the Ouveze river. It was such a delightful walk and our pace much slower. We captured views of Mont Vonteaux in the distance trying to entice us up its steep slopes all the while viewing innumerable cyclists zipping past us on the way to try and emulate the Tour de France climb up this imposing mountain. We are not succumbing, tomorrow is our rest day
Instead we continued our leisurely pace, picnicked near some grape vines before we continued to Vaison our base for the next 3 nights.
Charlotte took us through the ancient village before crossing the ancient Roman built bridge that saw the loss of many lives in 1992 when the river flooded, submerging the bridge. We noted a monument erected in memory of those lives that were lost. Upon crossing the bridge we entered a newer part of Vaison and were entranced by the chic boutiques, cafes and ambience of the town.
We freshened up and felt a great need to check Vaison out for ourselves. Tomorrow we will visit the ruins.
Met up with our group at 6.30 pm and we were encouraged to try the local aperitif which is an aperitif called 'Pastis' (aniseed flavoured) you can either have straight or water added. Apparently very popular with those playing boule. The tour group were most interested to see my reaction and Charlotte wanted to video the "ceremony" I believe i disappointed them as quite enjoyed the first few sips and a suggestion to add mint to this drink which I did was savoured. No I did not finish this alcoholic beverage.
We were recommended some lovely eating places and decided on ham, cheese & egg Crepes - ew la lah - with the addition of a fresh salad, and all washed down with a complimentary local cider.
Bed beckoned and we responded; pleasantly weary, deliciously full tummies, and full of anticipation for the day to come.
