Our day started with a breakfast of fresh baguettes and coffee/hot chocolate. We caught a cab to the Catacombs which is a 2km underground tunnel, where over 6 million skeletal remains line the walls. This sounds very morbid, but has been respectfully kept to educate us on how they managed the number of bodies in the 1800's. It was a very claustrophobic climb up and down a spiral staircase to get to the tunnels. The first of many stairs for the day!
We then caught the hop on hop off bus around Paris to view the sights and head to the Eiffel Tower. We got off at Hotel De Invalides which is an impressive structure that was built (complete with moat) around 1670 for the aged and unwell soldiers. We then dawdled towards the Eiffel Tower and stopped at a corner lunch bar for a Panini for lunch. We then continued on waking through cobblestone streets towards the Eiffel Tower.
This is as impressive as you can imagine, and is definitely worth the visit. We had pre- purchased 'skip the queue' tickets so caught the lifts to the summit and enjoyed the panoramic views with a glass of champagne to celebrate being here. The view from the summit allowed us to really appreciate the city for its beauty, history and architecture.
After the Eiffel we caught the hop on hop off bus again and made our way to the Sacre Coeur Basilica, which is a stunning Catholic Church high on a hill, also over looking Paris. However as it is high on a hill, that also means lots more stairs, our leg muscles are getting a great work out and it is only day two. We were very privileged that when we went inside the church, a mass was being held and this made the visit really special. We donated money to light candles for Grandparents that we had both lost and I am really pleased to have been able to do that in such a special place.
By this time it was nearly eight o'clock at night and still light, but we were definitely in need of a meal and drink, so we caught a cab to a restaurant near our hotel and had a great meal and chatted about our day over a few drinks.
Now off to bed before our last full day in Paris where we will visit the Louvrè, Champs Élysées, Arc de Triomphe (including the tomb of the Unknown Solidier) and take a restaurant cruise down the Seine for an Eiffel Tower light show.
