Burra is a historic town where there is an abundance of perfectly preserved buildings dating back to the 1850's. This town was the largest inland town in Australia until the 1860's when gold was discovered in Ballarat and Bendigo. It was also Australia's biggest copper mine and at one stage supplied 5% of the worlds total copper.
1800 people lived in the dugouts, built into the side of the creek at the peak of the copper mining boom in the 1850's. The copper mine was discovered in the late 1840's.
Warren and I decided to do the historic tour. This tour is a self guided tour where you register at the Information centre where they give you a map and keys and you do the tour at your own pace and let yourself into the various points of interest. There are about 10 keyed sites and we did the tour over 2 days, it was fantastic. We visited the old Redruth gaol, police station, mine site, railway station, Unicorn Brewery, miners dugouts, and the miners cottages it was great.
Burra has an amazing amount of history and the town has so many historic buildings, it was a great couple of days.
