We left Alice Springs on Wednesday after waking to another very cold morning. We were only travelling a couple of hundred kilometers so there was no rush. It was the start of a long and dusty drive up the Tanimi Track, which is 1000kms and most of it is dirt. We started at the right end because the road on the first day was tarred for the first 200 kilometers but after our first night at the Tilmouth Well Roadhouse we struck dirt. Most of the road was in reasonable order on the Northern Territory side of the border but once we hit the WA border road conditions deteriorated. Yesterday we had an early start from the roadhouse and drove 700kms. We were going to stop at the border rest stop but it was still daylight so we decided to go onto Sturt Creek rest stop in WA and were pleasantly surprised to find a great spot on the river bank. We turned off to see the Wolfe Creek Crater earlier today and were astounded at its size. It was certainly a different vista from the country we had passed on the track, which was Albert Namitjira scenery.
The last part of the Track from the W.A. Border was very rough and we were glad we had done the extra kilometers the night before.
We arrived in Halls Creek in the early afternoon and after setting up the camper we set off for a drive to Old Halls Creek. You are right Wendy there is not much left of it but the surrounding landscape is very picturesque.
Tonight we are off to the local hotel across the road for dinner to take in a bit of the Halls Creek atmosphere.
