We have now left Broome and had a reasonably short trip up to Derby. Our departure was a little delayed due to lack of working air pressure pumps at the first garage and we needed to find another to put air in the tyres for today's and tomorrow's trip on tarred roads then we need to let out the air for the Gibb River Road - such pressure!!
Following on from my blog yesterday we left Middle Lagoon and drove the short distance up to Cape Leveque. We arrived early and were set up by lunchtime. During the afternoon we walked over to the Eastern Beach(the swimming beach) past the lighthouse and onto a perfect beach. We met some people from North Rocks and decided that it would be nice to come back for a swim the next day when it was high tide. Well during the night we were awoken to the sound of extremely strong winds that continued until the morning. The people who were staying on the eastern side woke to find sand through all their camping gear. Lots of unhappy campers that morning! Steve was booked to go on a fishing trip but that was cancelled and a walk on either beach meant you received a sand blasting, not ideal beach weather for such a perfect spot. This meant we had to put plan B into action and we ended up having a very pleasant day. We visited the Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm and enjoyed the tour, then had a very pleasant lunch at the Cafe at the pearl farm. Another excellent cafe in an unusual setting. We then went up to One Arm Point, an aboriginal community and visited the aquaculture project started by four local children.
That evening we had dinner back at the restaurant at Cape Leveque. We had booked the table back in February when we booked our Accomodation and the meal was terrific.
The wind continued all through the next day, although it did ease up a little and we were able to go for a couple of walks on the Western Beach(the fishing and swimming beach), one during the day and another to watch the red cliffs as the sun set over the water. Steve once more was unable to go fishing due to the wind.
The next morning we packed up camp and drove back down to Broome to catch up on some washing and restock the pantry for our trip up the Gibb River Road. We also caught up again with the Haggarty's and watched a magnificent sunset over Cable Beach last night.
We arrived in Derby this afternoon and set up camp then drove out to the pier across the very large mud flats( Derby has the second largest tide in the world) then went to the other end of town to view another spectacular sunset behind a very large Boab tree.
Tomorrow we start the trek along the Gibb River Road and may be out of contact until we reach Kunanurra on the 6th July.
Hope you are all well and the weather is not too chilly or wet down south. Up here the wind has finally dropped and we are looking forward to returning to some sunny warm
Until our next blog, take care.
