We are here in Mumbai, or Bombay as it was once know, having arrived in India for the final leg of our trip. It's a real change to the luxury of Sydney but we are really enjoying the sights, sounds (maybe not the constant blaring of horns) and smells of India so far. Having spoken to a lot of people we had been preparing ourselves for complete bedlam, now there is definitely a lot of hustle and bustle but to be honest it's not been anything like as crazy as people led us to believe - maybe that will change. It feels very safe here and people, while curious and keen to sell you all manner of tat, have been friendly and helpful so far, especially the guy who walked us from his full hotel to a neighbouring one, even carrying a bag, at 4am when we arrived.
On our first day we appropriately visited the Gateway to India monument before spending the day wandering around the city and gazing at the pretty spectacular architecture, we then went home for a nap and woke up 14 hours later, that's probably more the effects of a day looking after James and Izzy before leaving Oz than Mumbai. Fully rested we visited Elephanta island on Saturday which is an island with caves that have been carved into Hindu temples in the 5th/6th century AD, we forked out a few quid on a guide which was really worth it as he explained all about the caves as well as some extra info on Hinduism. We then had a stroll through the Oval Maidens and watched one of the hundreds of intertwined cricket matches going on. Having been fairly cautious in our eating venues we then headed over to Chowpatty beach and ate with the locals in the evening - no ill effects to report so far, touching wood here.
And today we made our film debuts. Yes that's right we are going to be appearing in the Bollywood ripoff of Speed. However, rather than jiggling our stuff in saris for a Bollywood style dance off we have spent the day in suits in a mock up Network Rail office, effectively being civil servants. They obviously thought we looked the part as we have had a bit of camera time and Steve was being lined up for a speaking part when they spotted the ponytail (ask the make up guys) and turned elsewhere. That said it was a pretty boring day and we didn't get to see 400 dancers etc, although it was quite interesting watching the crew make the film, not worth the 7 quid each we earnt for about 8 hours work though.
Tomorrow we will probably be doing a bit more sightseeing around the city before we fly down to Chennai early on Tuesday morning. We will then be making our way back up to Mumbai overland for our flight home on 17th Feb. Internet cafes are not that common it seems here in the city so not sure how much we will be able to update you all but we'll do our best.
