Steph and Stevens travels!
Hey,
On Thursday we went for an 8 hour hike on the Franz Josef Glacier! The day started at 9.15 when we had to check in and put all our gear on. This included trying to work out New Zealand boot sizes which ended in Steph just wearing two pairs of thick socks. We also had to grab some talonz (spikes for our boots), a rain jacket, hat and a pair of gloves! After kitting out and making ourselves look pretty we got onto the bus to take us to the carpark. We then did an hours walk through the rain forest and valley to get to the bottom of the glacier! This is wear we put on our talonz and got going. The first hour was practically walking up millions of steps cut into the ice, it was pretty hard work seeing as we wasn't used to walking on the ice! After this we became pro's, doing the Franz shuffle when going down steps cut into vertical ice and squeezing through very narrow tunnels (wait for the pic of Steph getting stuck lol) and cravasses! Once we got higher, the ice became much cleaner and bluer, which was stunning. I got stuck once going through a really really narrow cravass and Steph thought it would be a good photo opportunity and made me smile looking rather nervous as I was stuck! We had our pack-up sat on the ice about half way through and we got very cold at this point. Steph says shorts on the ice is a very bad idea even though the guides advise it! However, I thought shorts and t-shirt was just about right until you stop waiting while people struggle with the steps! After a while, the guide started to walk us back down to the bottom and made it back safely, and we had a fantastic day which was well worth freezing at some points!
On Friday we left Franz Josef at 7.30am so that we could get to see Mt Cook and Mt Tasman reflected in Lake Matheson which is supposed to be an amazing sight. But unfortunately it was a bit foggy and raining so the reflection wasn't as good, but we could see the reflection quite a bit! We arrived in Wanaka around 2pm and checked into the hotel. We booked our room and got it for 60cents instead of $60 because she typed it in wrong. But they noticed and told us that we had to pay the rest before we left. After hours of consideration we decided to pay it in the morning lol, so we had a double room with ensuite, tv and fridge all for 60cents for the night lol. We went for a walk to Lake Wanaka which is beautiful and took a walk around the town which is very pretty! We then watched Neighbours and American Idol before making pasta for our tea. We then went to the Irish bar, Scruffy Murphy's for a couple of drinks with the group.
Today we travelled to Queenstown. We made a stop at Puzzling World which has a big maze, which we got annoyed and bored with, so we went into the illusion rooms which were ace. Especially the balance room, you are on a big slant, but everything in the room goes the opposite direction. There is a pool table slanting with you, but when you put the ball on the table it rolls up it. Also water runs upwards in there. After this fun hour we got back on the bus and continued to the bungy place where we watched our driver climb on top of the bungy bridge (higher than normal) and bungy off where his head submerged into the water below which looked cool! Unfortunately we can't afford to do a bungy and a skydive, so we chose to do the skydive which will be awesome. We arrived in Queenstown around 1pm and we are going for a walk around the town before going out for a meal with the group because over half are leaving today.
Pictures of NZ are coming in Christchurch hopefully, which will be Monday or Tuesday!
Love Steven and Stephanie xx
