Sunday 5th October 2014 Continued...
We finally arrived in Calgary, and we grabbed another taxi and headed to our hostel which looked really cute. It looked like a little chalet in the middle of a concrete jungle. There wasn't many sky scrapers nearby, but there was plenty of building work happening around the hostel which I think will be apartment buildings once they are finished. We are also right next door to the metro/train line too! Which gets a bit noisy but nothing too bad!
We dropped our bags off and headed out to find some food as we were both pretty hungry! We had some Chinese in China town, which was tasty. We got so much food though so we took the rest home for lunch tomorrow!
We hung around in the hostel and had a chat with some Aussies in the hostel that were starting work at the Calgary ski fields where the winter Olympics were held.
Monday 6th October 2014
We woke up pretty early and grabbed some free breakfast, I love free breakfast! We headed out into Calgary city, we walked through the Olympic Plaza where the medal ceremonies. The park is no filled with water with some fountains with plenty of green space to sit and eat lunch or have a coffee.
We walked down Stephen Avenue, which is an old historically part of Calgary, where the architecture is still there. I spent the morning looking in the souvenir shops, as normal, I brought an old Calgary stampede poster, Stu wasn't too impressed as usual!
We headed to the Calgary tower, we got a free audio iPod thing which actually had so much information about the tower and the city itself. I was very impressed! The tower is 191 meters tall it was opened on the 30th June 1968 and was the tallest structure in Calgary and Canada outside of Toronto until all the sky scrapers were built in Calgary.
They tower had a great view across the city and over the Bow and Elbow rivers. The iPod had loads of information about the surrounding buildings which have so much history in themselves. It was great learning everything! The tower has a glass floor that looks down on the road which was great to step on!
We spent a good hour looking out the windows an listening to the stories, we could even see the mountains in the distance and I was getting super excited!
We walked across the bridge over the river and got a great panoramic view of the sky line.
We had a little walk around the city which seems pretty small, but the suburbs are pretty big and reminds me of Perth a little bit. We went to the Bow building which had a giant sculpture of a head outside which was pretty cool to look at.
We headed back to the hostel and chilled out a little bit before we had left over Chinese for dinner!
We had an early night as we were getting a bus to Banff tomorrow.
Tuesday 7th October 2014
We had a lie in before we packed up our bags and put them in the storage before we headed out to the Glenbow museum as we had plenty of time to kill.
The museum was four levels and had some art work on the first level which showed the topic of ice/winter which showed some pretty awesome photos plus some really old first expeditions into the Arctic which was great to look at.
On the higher levels had aboriginal culture which was fantastic and had art work, teepees, tools that they made and used. It was extremely fascinating.
There was a level showing Calgary's history which showed the history of the trains, oil boom and important figures that shaped Calgary to the way it is today.
We spent a good hour looking at all the exhibitions before we headed back to the hostel to grab our bags and to catch the bus.
The bus was picking us up at another hotel five blocks away, it was a long walk with all the bag in tow, but this would be the last time for a while!
We got there on time, well as I thought, and we asked the hotel if the bus had come. Apparently it had already come 30 minutes earlier. I looked at my ticket and apparently the pick up from the hotel was not the time they had said on the top of the email but another time they put half way on the invoice. I was not impressed. In my 2.5 years of travelling, I have not missed anything. Not impressed with myself!
We were booked onto the next bus so we waited in the hotel, the staff were so nice and offered to get a coffee for me etc, but I felt bad so we just sat in the lobby waiting.
We finally boarded a bus to Banff! HOORAY!! It was a long journey! Too long, I just wanted to get there and settle in!!! We drove through all the suburbs which looked really nice, and we drove through the mountains, but it was getting dark so we couldn't see the view properly.
