Organized tours usually have little appeal to us, but we made an exception this time and joined an all-day (6 am until 10:30 pm) tour of Kangaroo Island. All our research called it a "must do." Kangaroo Island is the third largest island off the coast of Southern Australia and is about 90 miles long and 40 miles wide. It has only about 4000 inhabitants. It is native home to some of Australia's animal life. We boarded a coach this morning and drove an hour down the Fleurieu Peninsula, bordering the McLarren Vale wine country to the seaside port of Cape Jervis where we then took a large ferry for the 45-minute ride across a very cold and choppy Backstairs Passage. From there we boarded another comfortable coach and began the trek from the east side of the island and back - total of about 350 km round trip
We are so glad we did. It's the only opportunity you can have to see so many Australian animals in their natural habitat in a relatively short period of time. Of course, the tour guide knows best places for sightings but the facts are, if the animals are in sight, it's a good day. It they are not, they just are not. We also went through some of the most unusual, rugged and yet beautiful terrain we have ever seen. We saw Western Gray Kangaroo, Australian Sea-Lions, koala, New Zealand Fur Seals and Kangaroo Island Kangaroo. The adorable koala is not native to the island but rather were introduced there from Australia. I'll let the photos speak for themselves. By the way, I love my new camera and telephoto lens. Thank you, Stan!!
It was a wonderful day.
Tomorrow, we rent a car and drive the Barossa Valley, wine country.
