To quote a favorite acquaintance from our travel adventures, Sean, day manager of J. Hanlon's Pub, Dublin, Ireland, "Now this is a proper holiday!" The beach! We have been in Australia four nights so far and today was our first time on one of their world famous beaches.
We took the tram to the end of the line, Glenelg Beach. There are plenty of beaches around Adelaide, but we heard this was the nearest and one of the best. And it was! The harbor town of Glenelg is located on the Holdfast Bay, part of the Great Australia Bight. It was lovely . . . white sand, clear waters, plenty of good restaurants, and clear blue skies! The temperature today was over 40 degrees Celsius (that's over 100 degrees as we know it). Good grief! Sitting on the beach was like sitting under a gas broiler!! Hot, hot, hot! We enjoyed the beach for about an hour - which was all we could possibly bear!!
Next stop was late lunch -a restaurant with first, good A/C and second, decent food. Two big bottles of ice cold water, a shared beer, fish and chips for Stan and calamari salad for me. We were pretty well done in for the day.
Tomorrow . . . Kangaroo Island. It better be good, very pricey for a one-day tour!
You know, I saw a shooting star in the vast Australian sky last night. A truly long and beautiful one. First one I've seen in years. I made a very special wish.
