Day 1 is off and racing.... left home at 0300hrs with a very excited 8yo.... It has been an easy drive until we were 246km from Broken Hill when we encountered a marauding mob of kamikazi kangaroos - each with a death wish - and Selwin obliged one with their desire.... He hit the brakes and collected the Roo on the front right side.... Saffron happily snoozing away on the back seat didn't even stir..... now to find a place to assess the damage the 6ft Australian delicacy left us.... We eventually stopped at Yunta - before that it was too much like Wolf Creek territory and I'm pretty sure we passed Mick's truck as we approached Yunta. The Roo, we have affectionately named Squishy did a bit of damage - light bar bracket smashed, bullbar bent back, right front quarter panel dented and compressed, inner front right guard broken, right front fog lamp and parking sensors smashed - but no remanents of Squishy anywhere.... Luckily Agatha is still driveable and all lights still work, so we continued trundling along the highway.
We arrived at Broken Hill at 0815hrs for breakfast at Macca's.... We could not believe how busy it was - there would have been an easy 50 people having brekky like us.... But sadly the standard of food was dismal...
So, on the road again heading to Wilcannia... Well, we sort of bypassed Wilcannia - there are only so many buildings with bars on the windows and "coorobaree's" on the median strip to encourage a drive through to the next town. We came across a roadhouse at Emmdale not far from Wilcannia - that although could quite happily be the back drop to Wolf Creek - was really good.... The place is run by backpackers who provide amazing food with quick and polite service.. But Saffron did have an issue with the the toilets - apparently they are "creepy"... Clean but creepy
The rest of the days travel was uneventful and we arrived in Nyngan about 1600hrs - our home for the night was the Nyngan Riverside Tourist Park. Our first port of call was the Big Bogan - Nyngan's claim to fame as they are in the Shire of Bogan.. Exploring the Tourist Park, we find there are some animals - one in particular took a liking to Selwin (the resident camel) and so after having his face licked/kissed and his hands sucked on - a quick clean up was required before heading off to dinner..
We decided on dinner at the RSL which provided a courtesy pick up/drop off bus service - how cool! Now we could both have a drink as there was a RBT across the road from the cabin park... The driver was great - funny, and full of info and the night was totally enjoyable... We got back to the cabin and enjoyed a relaxing wine on the front verandah... It was peaceful and relaxing - just what was needed....
