Driving on the wrong side of the road (the right hand side) hasn't proved too bad but one thing that is a pain when driving in Hawaii is navigation. On the Big Island Hilo was relatively small, Kaua'i really had only one road, however O'hau is a different matter all together. In the Honalulu and Waikiki area the population is a lot higher and one has to make sure that you're in the right lane for where you want to turn. This is not unlike any other major city where you'd identify the cross road street names and know then where you are and where you want to turn. Easy right? Wrong.
The Hawaiian alphabet only has 13 letters and the Hawaiians are very fond of names starting with 'L' or 'K'. Every second street in the islands is named with a 10 letter word starting with either an 'L' or a 'K' thus the navigator and driver are reading street signs with this large Hawaiian words and struggling to match them up to the corresponding streets on the map. Its a nightmare.
Yesterday went to the North Shore to look at the famous surf beaches of Sunset, Pipeline and Wimea. It was a bit disappointing as the swell was 0 feet (they get the waves in winter. As a conselation we did see some sea turtles, had a great feed at Giovani's Shrimp (prawn) truck and did have some fantastic shave ice from Matsumoto's (best in the islands).
