Last night I went to a lauau woth Jamie and her two friends. It was billed to me as the cheesiest event ever ad it featured the Hawaiian crooner Glen Mederos, a one hit wonder from the late eighties. It was hosted in a big garden at one of the flash resorts on Waikki Beach.
It started looking up with a fantastic meal of traditional Hawaiian/Polynesian foods Poi (pureed taro), Kileua pig, fish, roast chook etc which was actually very good and as the night progressed and the sun set Glen turned up on stage to host and entertain with a number of cute Hawiian dancing girls. Glen was cheese personified but it was quiet an entertaining show - he even went through his big one hit in several languages. Toward the end of the night they got audience members out to learn to Hula (from the 500-600 strong crowd. Guess who they picked? I must have something tattooed on my forehead I can't see saying "Pick me" as I always seem to get sucked into these things. There are some photos in my dancing get up which I will post shortly but even worse there is now a second video of me dancing which will come back to haunt me one day (besides the Timika karoke one). The upside of this was that I got to personally meet and bond with Glen, I hope this isn't my 15seconds of fame....
At the end of the show Glen started getting all patriotic and got all former and present US servicemen in the crowd to stand up and recieve applause for fighting for the US. I'm all for honouring people who fought for their country but this is taking patriotism to a whole new level - being a forigner in the crowd I started to feel a bit awkward. I had noticed over the past two weeks in Hawaii how much of a presence the military has in the states, from army bases to every second car having a number platewith a US flag and stating Vetern. It just goes to show how large a component of the States the armed forces are. I also when to the USS Arizona memorial that morning and was impressed by the memorial and its organisation but also by the sheer numbers that visit it on a daily basis.
All in all it was a great night of food and entertainment which insanely cost only $45USD. I'm even considering not getting married by Elvis in a Las Vegas kwiki wed chappel but getting Glen over as he IS the master of cheese.
