This was another short travel day where we only went 10 miles. We are thoroughly enjoying our time in the 1000 Islands and making several stops be for we head into Canada.
Even with the short ride the scenery was amazing. We passed islands just big enough to hold the small house built on them too island with mansions on them. In the water we passed everything from paddle boarders to freighters. It is one thing when we pass a freighter a couple hundred yards away, but to watch someone on a paddle board do it is amazing. It is even more amazing to go from 180' of water to 10 feet of water in seconds.
We had planned on docking at the Village Dock in Alexandria Bay. The docks are first come first serve with no water or electric and they cost $2 per foot. We decided that it was worth paying $3 and going to a marina. We later found out, because the Village Docks are under construction they are not charging yet.
We started our visit by taking our dinghies to Boldt's Castle. I have been to the castle more times than I can count starting in the early 80's. The first time I visited the castle was in very bad shape. There were a couple of rooms that were remodeled, with displays of what it would have looked like had been finished. Each time I go more and more of the castle is finished. Now the first and second floor are completely refinished and it looks like they plan to eventually complete the entire castle.
After visiting the castle we headed into town. We spent the afternoon walking around downtown checking out all the stores. It is very much like most New Jersey shore towns, with t-shirts shops and stores selling all kinds of knick-knacks, ice cream shops and bars.
Friday night we grilled out behind the boats, with an awesome view of Boldt's Castle.
Saturday we took the dinghies back into town, so we could hope on a tour boat to visit another castle. Singer Castle on Dark Island, is located about 10 miles north of Alexandria Bay and well worth the visit. Singer Castle was built in 1905 for Frederick Bourne the president of Singer Sewing Machine. The castle is in its original condition.
Our next stop will be Keewaydin State Park, located a whole 1.2 miles from Alexandria Bay.
