The South America Adventure!
Hola everyone! Here is our diary of what we've been doing in the last few days:
Tuesday we went bike riding around Merida, lots of tour offers around the town. After about 2 hours of agonising and coin flipping we decided we would go on one of the tours. In the evening, on the way back to the hotel from dinner we bumped into a group of deafies. We were fascinated by their sign language, and learnt some venezuelan sign language, and were able to talk to them, which was exciting!
Wednesday. Woke up with Emlyn's alarm clock at 6am only to realise that it was actually 5am (he'd set the time wrong!); got an extra hour's sleep! Ready by half 6 to meet our tour guides, Alberto and Tillo. The four hour journey to the start of our adrenaline feast , wasnt wasted, views of the mountains, rivers, waterfalls was an added bonus to the trip.
Arrived in Bruzal after getting changed we set off to Ria Apure for white water rafting. The start was not enough for aderenaline junkies Emlyn and Ant (I'd fallen out first with Emlyn saving me from my near death!!). It soon livened up as the water got rougher and we raced throught the reps. All too soon it was the end of the rafting, but the fun didnt stop there, one of the local boys showed us a bridge (20mtrs!!!Height for someone like me who has a fear of heights!)which we were to jump off into the river. Determined to do it,I jumped off first, with loud scream and a pretty painful smack (which no doubt would have amused the locals who think nothing of it!)!But i loved it all the same!We swam down the reps with the local boys: whom had no shoes on dispite the hot, sharp rocks and could climb up the massive rocks, wheras Ant could bearly manage!!
End of an amazing day, we head 5hours to the camp in Los Llones wondering what we're going to be given for dinner.
It was quite a scary drive to the camp, in the dark, with the rain pouring down and the clouds so low, and the road badly damaged with holes made it so difficult for Tillo, the driver to drive.Ant and Emlyn spotted a caiman and a snake in the road on the way; which unfortunately I was fast asleep!
On arriving at the camp we learnt that the nearest \"corner\" shop is 2 hours away! We were then shown to our room which was a sort of hut with hammocks: it certainly was an experience to sleep in an hammock.
The next morning we were woken up by our guide Alberto (the poor guy had a hard time waking us up:especailly the boys!), after having the most beautiful, comfortable sleep in the hammocks. We vow we will buy one for when we get home!
After breakfast we mounted our horses to set off in search of wildlife. Ant's horse had a mind of it's own disobeying Ant's attempts to steer it wondered off into the shade (with Ant on it of course!), cant say I blame it as it was blazing hot.I had a lovely horse,White with Brown Spots, a proper American Indian horse!Off walking along the tracks and throught the rivers (it'd been raining during the
night so the fields were flooded). Emlyn, his horse the fastest galloped off: we all followed fast behind. It was amazing, losing all interest in finding snakes and just enjoying galloping throught the plains and water, in the words of Mel Gibson, Braveheart \"FREEDOM!\"
Sore backs and bums later covered in mud and wet, we stopped off at a local school for a break. Here we saw a monkey and an Anteater up close: Emlyn got to hold the anteater. A very strange creature! After galloping back to the camp we had lunch and a kip then set off on top of Tillo's landrover to see the Anaconda which we'd heard some men had found. The Anaconda was 6 metres long, MASSIVE and very scary!Ant and Emlyn held it (which they said was incredibly heavy), I just proded
it the massive scales sent shivers down my spine!Alberto told us that another Anaconda had been found in the past with a man inside, said to be a Belgian (mmmhhh, Emlyn!)
We got back on top of the Landrover and drove to the river for a boat tour and piranha fishing. It wasnt long after we all had fished up quite a handful of piranhas, which we learn were for our supper!
We then set off in search for other animals along the river. We were excited when we spotted three pink dolphins! And were amazed to learn (in Ant's case didnt believe!) that these dolphins were the King of the river and could eat caimans, piranhas and even an anaconda!!
Back to the camp, supper was piranhas which Emlyn refused to try, but Ant with a LOT of persuding had a TINY bit which he hated! It took me a while to psych myself up to eat, and wasnt too bad but I wont be eating again! The evening we showered (I shared my shower with a frog!) and went to bed, ready to set back the next morning.
Next Stop: Colombia!
