The South America Adventure!
Hola,
After our superb successful safari trip in Los Llanos. Came back to Barinas and left our tour guide. We've been exploring around the town before heading to Colombia via San Christobal, San Antonio. It took us a while to get to Cucuta in Colombia, at the border between the 2 countries.
In Cucuta, we were nervous, paranoid, but excited. Whilst in Colombia, it's probably the most dangerous country in the world, apart from Iraq according to our travel book. Anyway, found a hotel and were starving from the most horrified journey in the mountain! We've been given many advices from strangers not walk on the street in the evening but we didn't want it to spoil our travels and stay in hotels, wasting our opportunties to compare the difference during the day and evening. also Colombia's passion is the nightlife, so we had to check it out! After eating delicious and our regular pollo y frites. We then went to a bar and it amazed us because there were full of sex stuff, eg. Prostitutes, porn on the T.V and people were dealing drugs, which i caught a man taking cocaine and it pretty scared me off! But we acted normal and enjoying our habit drinking beers, giggling at the sights of these girls trying their best to tempt us into doing something silly!
Next day, in the morning, it was the worst thing for us because we were woken up by police! They wanted to check our passports and we had to explain why we are here in this country, etc.... It was third time we got stopped by the police! and wondering why?! Perhaps, they aimed to foregin people, or maybe the look of Emlyn's clothes and hair made us look like criminals!
Cucuta was our stop-over to Bogota and it was a nice place to visit. They were friendly and there were loads of market which we could afford anything we wanted.
After the long day strolling around Cucuta, we set off to Bogota by coach. It took us 16 hours to get there from Cucuta. The seat were soo comfortable and I could easily sleep. Embles and I bought some beers on the break to help us fall asleep through the bumpy journey, but Emlyn stupiditily drank 5 beers in 1 go (well sort of) and he was showing off, trying to make me ashamed. But eventually, he couldn't sleep most of the night because we were climbing up the mountains (on the way to Bogota), the high altitude made his ears pop. Of course, I laughed my head off on the next morning!
Arrived in ........the word that we never ever dream to go there .....Bogota! We wanted to try our best to visit the main highlights of the capital for 2 days as quick as we can. Sadly, for the last 1 week we have been looking EVERYWHERE for a charger for Emlyn's camera as he stupiditily stupiditily left his charger in Puerto Colombia. We realised his camera is too advanced for Latin America's technology that they dont have the charger to charge up his batteries! It's vital to us because we want to put our photos in our website so you can look it up. We then went to Internet and bumped to 3 Colombian deafies. It was ideal because we love to visit International deafies and see their cultral. We had a amzing time, went to bar and chatted up. We then bought Colombian spirit which are soo strong! We went back to our hotel for more chatting, till very late. Bree fell asleep towards the end as the International Sign Language became a bit difficult for her to follow! It was great to meet them and found interesting information and stories about their lives, etc...
Today, we were supposed to go to Museo del Oro but the queue was miles! Disappointed to miss it because it's the most important gold museum in the world, well arguably. We decided to go to colourful Mercado de San Alejo, a flea market held at the car park. I bought Colombian football top to help me to keep safe! Really it looks good and i'm considering to buy each country's football top.
Bogota is a city of brilliant museums, splendid colonial churches, futuristic architecture and artist. What amazed me is their car number plates, they are all over the cars, the lorries, etc, even on the top which sounds like it's a criminal city! There are dozens of soldiers, i'd say every 50 metres. They looked soo young, perhaps it's their first step of experience being in the army! But for me it seemed daft of the Bogotian government to have the soldiers in the street, day time only, surely it would be a good idea to use the soldìers in the evenings.
We've seen many things that made us feel grateful of being in a rich country - we witnessed a family sharing a meal in restaurants, and children grabbing whatever was left from our dinners, and many tramps searching the disgusting rubbishs in the streets.
Gotta stop here now, we're late for our coach for another long journey of 12 hours to Cali, south of Colombia.
