We arrived in La Paz after our crucible of bus rides tired, hungry and in need of a shower and utterly lost. To add to this, Lisa seemed to be suffering from a bit of altitude sickness. We wondered the streets until we found a cafe with wifi, where after a couple of mugs of coca tea - excellent stuff - and a destination in mind, we headed to the Adventure Brew, a hostel/brewery near the bus depot of La Paz. There, we had a well needed wash, a nap and something to eat, put the much needed load of laundry on (imagine the smell of bagged wet clothes that haven't been dried or aired in three days), and headed out to explore the city.
Geographically, La Paz is a strange place. Set in a huge basin at the high altitude of 3650 masl, the rich neighbourhoods are found at the low points of the basin while the suburbs extend up the side, climbing to the top surrounding La Paz. From out hostel in the low basin centre, it gave the impression of being stuck in a huge bubble, with suburbia leaning overhead.
Our first point of call fro the day was the Witches Market, where gnarled old ladies sold all manner of pseudoscience, including dried llama fetus to bless a new building. After that, we wandered up into the artsy district to check out the museum of traditional modern Bolivian instruments. These ranged from horns taller than I am, to guitars of tortoise and armadillo and everything in between. Another interesting item was a small pedal powered accordion, apparently used in Bolivian folk music. There was also, strangely enough, a didgeridoo!
For dinner we went to a Mexican restaurant where, for $100 BOB (~$20 AUD) we had a huge feast before rolling back to the hostel, enjoying a free beer and some foosball and table tennis before heading to bed.
