Hey all,
it appears for some reason you couldnt access the first entry of our blog but hopefully this time it will work.
Week 1
Well the start of the trip was quite eventful. Jo turned up smelling of a distillery, no change there and decided to brush her teeth in the checking in queue! We then got through to the T3 departure lounge only to hit the shops, yep we were getting withdrawals. Whilst shopping we didnt realise the time and we had 15 mins till take off and very near missed our flight, what a great start. Then got on plane only to find we were sat miles apart. Yeah i know what your thinking, how the hell did i manage not to talk for 10 whole hours, it was one hell of a struggle and i couldnt wait to land in Dallas.
After 3 hours of chatting in Dallas, making up for lost time, we had our names called out for final boarding, so thats 2 flights we nearly missed, surely things can only get better for us. I have about 8 more flights yet!
Arrived in cancun very late friday night. After touring the whole town twice over in a taxi, we finally got to bed at 7am british time.
Saturday 12th Dec - Went to Chichen Itza, one of the new 7 wonders of the world - was pretty impressive but we struggled to keep our eyes open after having a severe lack of sleep. Stayed in the dodgy part of Downtown Cancun, cant say i would recommend it to any of you, felt pretty unsafe and the locals wouldnt stop harrassing us, Jo in particular with her blonde hair!
Sunday - moved onto Tulum to stay in a Cabana right on the most beautiful beach, great experience even though it drained our budget. Whilst in Tulum we rode s***ty bikes, not quite the Muddy Fox and Specialised we are used to but hey it was a great laugh riding with no brakes, a chain that continually kept falling off and padals out of sync. Met up with Daania, one of Jo's mates, for dinner, stayed in a 12 bed dorm that night, was a good laugh.
Tuesday - We went to see the ruins in Tulum, stunning views from the cliff top overlooking the turquoise waves. Plenty of iguana's. Set off for Belize midday and started to head to Belize City, not realising how long the journey really was. Luckily 3 canadian guys saved us from the trauma of the dodgy city at night and stayed in Orange Walk with them and went for a yummy chinese meal.
Wednesday - Got the local bus at 8am to belize city, bus was an expereince, reggae music blaring out, strobe light and jam packed. Then got boat to Caye Caulker, one of the many tiny beautiful islands off the coast. Then went on a snorkelling trip to the barrier reef and swam with tropical fish and sting rays. Trust me, i was straight back in the boat when the sting rays came along, i didnt want to end up like Steve Irwin!! Great trip though. Jo seems to think she saw a HUGE shark, yes i have recommended laser surgery to her! Went to a couple of reggae bars in the evening, such a chilled atmosphere, we loved it.
Thursday- we made our way to Placencia, another beach resort. Was a pretty erie 50's style place. Great chicken with mango and rum sauce though.
Friday - Went on a trip down Monkey River and went trekking in the jungle. Saw lots of Howler Monkeys, Crocs, Manatees and turtles. Really enjoyed the experience but i got eaten alive by mosquito's. Then left mid afternoon trying to escape payment for our room, only to realise that there was no chance of running with my bloody heavy backpack. Oh i forgot to mention that i overpacked somewhat and it weighs as much as me!!! No joke my back is crippled already and we are only 13 days into the trip! Girls trust me you really dont need 14 tops, 5 pairs of shoes and the entire contents of Boots' toiletries, its not worth the pain and after a while (2 Days) you dont care what you look like and will happily wear the same top 3 times!! lol Sorry back to friday- we went to San Ignacio, along the Hummingbird Highway, amazing scenery but unfort we didnt see any jaguars. Met up with Daania and her friend Liz for drinks that night.
Saturday - all of us went on a trip caving and river tubing, what a great laugh. Wasnt laughing too much when we all had to crawl on our stomachs through the tinest holes in the caves in our bikini's. Floating down the river in our rubber tubes made up for it though. Biggest advice given by the tour guides was 'butts up girls' otherwise you grounded on the rocks. Went for a traditional belizian meal with the girls- my god i dont think we can stomach anymore rice and beans!!
Sunday- we all went to Tikal ruins in the jungle in Guatemala. Def better than Chichen Itza but we are ruined out now so need to see some different scenery. really good and well worth the visit. Gary- you would have been in your element with all the different types of trees we saw and we are now tree experts, so i expect that job to be mine when i get back!
We then then moved on to Flores which is on lake Peten Itza. Nice place but shame about the very dodgy neighbouring town, St Elena.
Monday - Got on an 'interesting' bus to Rio Dulce. It was jam packed full of people that stank, a women breast feeding and kids spitting on the floor and eating rice off the seats, needless to say the 4 hours could not have gone quick enough. Landed on our feet when we arrived outside of town and was rescued by a guy that recommended a lodge on the lake run by a lovely Kiwi girl. The place is soo relaxed, free kayaking and they make the best dinners. Sorry Nath, tonight im not missing your culinery skills!
Tommorow we are off to see the hot spring waterfalls and kayaking on the lake. So sadly girls Kurt Geiger hasnt crossed my mind until now!
