Hello Everyone!
We've arrived in Kanchanaburi and spent our first night in 'Blue Star Guesthouse', our room was a little hut on stilts over the River Kwai hidden away in between reeds and beautiful flowers. When we arrived we realised that Kanchanaburi was far more spread out than Bangkok and to get between places would take a little longer. Kie's master plan was hatched - moped!!!
We walked down the road 100 or so yards and came across Mee Mek. We got our little Honda 100cc for £2 a day! Keen to try out the new set of wheels, we headed for the petrol station just down the road - only, we took the very long way round! Back at our little hut we were treated to a huge firework display - which Sophie confused with exploding bombs, a few moments later, gunfire before then looking out of the window to find they were indeed just fireworks!!!! The sound and vibrations were unbelievable, even Kie thought they were gunshots at first!!!!!!
After having a nights sleep in what sounded like the jungle, we moved onto our current hotel 'Noble Night'. We are staying in the "Floating House" on the River, which is even more beautiful than the first. Once we'd dumped our bags and sorted ourselves out, we decided a day of sightseeing was in order so we jumped on our moped and set off. We headed to the Jeath War Museum, a small place to remember the Prisoners of War who served there. It was an interesting place with some horrific stories to tell. It was well worth a visit. We jumped back on the ped and headed to the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and Thailand-Burma Railway Centre. Both very interesting in their own way, although access to the Cemetery is not permitted so this meant you could only really look from the entrance gate.
After having a spot of lunch we then headed to River Kwai Bridge. Terrifying for Sophie! The Bridge was open to walk across - which meant it was heaving with tourists wanting photos - obviously Thai health and safety isn't anything like ours is in the UK. Across the Bridge there are huge gaps of 4ft in places, with no safety railings, meaning one slip and you're heading for a long fall into the River for a swim - which Sophie kept reminding Kie who was skipping merrily across without a care. Idiot.
Over the next few days we're heading to Erawan Waterfalls and the Monkey School, so we'll be updating you all soon!
Take care, lots of love Sophie and Kie xx
PS. Look at the photo's of the tiniest frogs in the world - they were washed up during a storm and we initially mistook them for bits of mud!!!!!!
PPS. When checking these blogs, if we write two from the same place, to access them you need to change the date in the drop-down box above. i.e. there's three from Bangkok; so you need to click on the dates to read them individually.
