Well, when I first decided to go to Tallinn it was mainly because it was a place I hadn't been too and I had heard good things about it, so I figured I would go
The good things I had heard were certainly true.
After arriving in at midnight that morning, I left the hostel at 10am and found a café for breakfast. The menu was pastries and a berry smoothie (not a protein smoothie though). After that, the plan was to walk and get lost in the old town until and then join a walking tour starting at 12pm.
The old town is magical. I first walked to the town square where there were the Christmas markets. I then took a random street and just started walking. The streets of the old town are so individual and interesting. I ended up in a shop where the lady who ran it was also collecting a private stash of photos of Tallinn since the 1800s. She kept them underneath the shop in the basement that is from the 14th Century. She showed me what she had and it was really cool! She had such a passion for her city and it was great listening to her.
I continued walking and ended up back in the town square ready for the walking tour. If you are ever in a foreign city, check out their walking tours! You leave a tip and get 2 hours of authentic local information and get to see a side of the city you never would have.
After all that walking it was time for elk soup. For €5 I got a bowl of elk soup, glögi and a cow pie (don't call it a beef pie). Best meal ever!
I then went to the occupation museum. This went through Estonia's history from the early 1900s until the 1990s when they became independent. That is my favourite part of history and I highly liked it.
After that, I went to a supermarket to pick up some fruit. Out the front of the supermarket there was a dance competition. I was tempted to join in but didn't want to beat them all so I just watched for a bit from the barrier.
That night I met up with two new friends - Ivo and Liis Unt (pastors at the local church.) They are such awesome people and we enjoyed one of Tallinn's many café/bars. A very fun night indeed.
Day one - success
